šŸŽµ How Good Are They Really šŸŽµ Destiny's Child

i was not really a big fan when they came out in the late 90s but i really loved that they did a song with master p on their debut. kinda fun to hear them over klc beats and jermaine dupri beats (with me part 2 and with me part 1, respectively)… nothing is more 1998 than that.

i was a dumb high school kid and thought i had to dislike women empowerment music so when their second album came out led by bills bills bills and say my name i had to be a hater. i was firmly in the no pigeons camp in the ā€˜no pigeons’ vs ā€˜no scrubs’ debate which was going on around this time.

i grew out of that and went back and did a deep dive through the catalog later and there’s plenty to love in there outside of the singles. i think their debut and final album together have aged the best actually, probably cos i like them (and later beyonce) in r&b mode slightly more than pop mode.

second nature is probably my favorite song by them

9th wonder did the beat for girl, love it

she cant love you

Fantastic singles band, absolutely top-class, superb pop music. You couldn’t say that they did anything massively groundbreaking though. That’s not really a criticism but it puts them more in the 3-4 range than the 4-5 range in my view.

Not my sort of thing. They’re good at what they do though. 2

Didn’t expect this thread to have such a gammon vibe tbh

Because a few people have said they aren’t really a fan? Not everyone has to like incredibly popular music.

Yeah, just goes against the grain of these threads in general.

No kidding

Not really? I’d say it’s much milder than a lot of the threads. Is there anything anywhere near as dismissive as the first few posts about Springsteen?

Gone in for that big 4 purely cause as stated above Bey has outshone the bands work by some distance. All the records are slick AF though and they’ve obviously got some all time singles. I was too busy being a fucking boring dickhead when it came out but Writing’s on the wall is probably my favourite lp of theirs now and was absolutely vital to a lot of the girls in my year group at the time. could probably do with a new run through them all again.

It looked like they were all genuinely thrilled to be there on homecoming, was really heartwarming. Also loved hearing Kelly show up on Seat At The Table.

Cool, I’m sure there were threads that started more harshly yes, doesn’t mean the context is the same or if I expected them to do as badly/well. I didn’t expect this thread to have gone this way so far, nor to have had reminded me of the wider gammon community.

I like a lot pop musicians will come here and praise it till the cows come home, but when I enter a thread asking for my opinion on an act and I gove one I dont expect to be called out on it for honestly responding. This poptism peer pressure has literally started eating it’s own tail, apparently you now have to like all pop music UNLESS they’re a white male. I’m kind of getting sick of it to be honest.

Why do you think not liking an incredibly popular musical act makes someone a gammon? What makes someone a gammon for not liking Destiny’s Child compared to, say, Springsteen or RHCP for example?

Based purely of genuine experience

Of people in this thread?

Ah I’m not calling anyone out. I saw someone say genesis was better (might’ve been a joke!!) and it literally reminded me of something a gammon would say.

Nah of gammons

It might be because I’m used to people slyly suggesting racism or sexism in these threads from experience whenever someone is negative about a pop act

I reckon everyone’s experience of that would be entirely personal but of course destiny’s child as an all black girl group have a very specific context within music. Should note that I’m not really targeting anyone or accusing anyone of anything, just saw some comments and think it sounded vaguely gammon-y, and was just genuinely surprised.

Can’t really see a gammon vibe here. The genesis comment is odd but other than a few people respectfully abstaining, it’s been pretty positive? Personally found it more odd that the fourth or so comment was ā€˜go away, rockists’ before anyone’s even had the chance.

Destinys Child are good imo. Only know the hits so dipped in and out to see if there are any albums I should have checked out.
