never heard the word āgammonā until this exchange but this seems like a weird thread to make this argument? itās like 85% positive vibes in here and the rest have been pretty tame ānot my thingā type of response +1 probably joke post by gorkys. if anything it would be more interesting to hear more dissenting (but well reasoned) opinions in these threads.
dont think anyoneās said anything gammony or racist in this thread tbh but probs worth interrogating why the only really high scoring black artists are from 50 years ago and part of the rock canon by now, contemporary (i.e. from the last 40 years) black artists generally scoring lower than expected and by miles the highest scoring hip hop act is white. not even saying itās down to individuals being intentionally racist but clearly thereās a pattern there and it probs leads to people being a bit defensive of certain artists
Dunno why youād make a judgement call on whatās weird or not for a word youāve literally just heard of, I wasnāt lying though however strange it may seem to you
i mean i looked it up is there more meaning to it than a quick google search? seemed pretty easy to understand the gist. i havent been in all these threads (maybe 10 or so) did this one seem more egregious than others as far as having a gammony vibe? maybe im used to older dis which was way worse and pop threads got like no love outside of a few of us. i like @shrewbie 's post above mine though. thereās def underlying issues and im not trying to dismiss it⦠this thread just didnt seem that bad to me, maybe im missing something.
Sure, if you compare something to personal experience, youād need the context of that experience too. Stands to reason. The whole vibe of multiple users in here is very strange, I appreciate nobody wants to be called out for disliking Destinyās Child, and I havenāt done that - but I have seen comments thatāve reminded me of what a certain demographic of people would say about them, so expressed surprise.
thatās fair. i think i came in here expecting worse is probably where my surprise at your surprise came from.
Solid 5
Thereās only one inflammatory comment here which is kinda funny and no worse than what most of these threads get (Gorkyās or Yvashās post here for instance)
THAT SAID this thread isnāt that bad and thereās a wee bit of unnecessary defensiveness too but tbh thatās basically all of these threads too because we are talking acts people LOVE and HATE in equal measure. Think @shrewbieās post is a very good point in summary.
Had totally forgotten about that.
I remember being at a big house party and someone mixed No Pigeons into No Scrubs and a couple of girls when wild - trying to pull the record off the turntables, massive fight ensued.
I dunno looking at the top 30 or so acts Iād say most of them had their heyday around the same time and that nostalgia has a huge part to play in overall standing
Lets all agree that the Beastie Boys are a fusion band and the highest scoring hip hop act is the Wu-Tang Clan.
And the only modern artist in that top 30.is Kendrick. But then again the rankings is mostly made up.of nostalgia acts anyways (as theyāll get the most votes probably)
Like I dont doubt that there are rock elites voting here but I reckon there are way more people going the opposite direction. Legacy rock acts have been getting SLAUGHTERED and those threads tend to have leagues more negativity in them. I really dont know where the overarching claim of these threads that shitting on black artists comes from if Iām honest other than presumptions.
I guess it depends how you categorise things. But if you make your way down the list the first person whose best material has been released in the last twenty years has been Kendrick Lamar? Heās the highest scoring new artist anyway.
Was almost as serious as the east coast west coast beef lol.
Completely agree, and seems to be massively underappreciated. Was surprised even at the time that this didnāt erupt into a new wave of appreciation for DC, especially as this came out when Beyonceās solo career wasnāt as established as it is now. I donāt even remember the circumstances of its release - was it on an album? I canāt remember any other singlesā¦
Pretty sure it was the lead single for destiny fulfilled which was pretty big. Was clearly the biggest tune off it in terms of airplay. If Iām right this was after crazy in love so I think it was recognised her solo career was going to be pretty unstoppable, even the name of the album suggested DC were calling it a day.
Either way Iāve grown to really like it after not being so fussed and is a nice part of the thread of marching band music that runs through her catalogue - was pretty obvious Really even though I hadnāt clocked it til homecoming!
This child, for one, feels they definitely fulfilled their destiny of earning a 5.
Feel like with 99+ people having voted, but only 24 people having posted in this thread, they are going to get a low score. Wonder whether theyād score higher on the social forum.
Find it hard to score this sort of group: some absolute bangers mixed with a pretty substantial amount of filler across their albums. Gone a 3. Reckon Iād take Beyonceās solo output over DCās pretty easily. Almost went 4 on the strength of the opening 3 tracks on Survivor.
