i’ve never been a big eminem fan. big hurdle for me was that i absolutely loathed my name is which was his lead single… so it was hard to get over the hump from there. i think for a lot of people that were already into rap previous to his rise and had dealt with some shock value in the genre (wu tang skits, kool g rap, dre/snoop,doggpound, too short, etc) he wasnt that big of a deal. i think what made him stand out was his ability to really nail a hook + the dre co sign and choice of dre production (plus skin color of course). pretty much every song on the debut has a good hook, or at least a memorable hook, and if it doesnt then its just straight rapping no hooks (as the world turns) which is always gonna get the respect of the rap heads. i really tired of him after the debut and never really checked anything deep beyond his 2nd album. think my fav stuff of his is just the subdued tracks like if i had or rock bottom.
