Transformer is great , my fave track is satellite of love. Never really listened beyond that, and John Robins off the John robins and Elis James podcast really loves him so I’m assuming he’s a bit rubbish overall.
transformer is a fucking great record, berlin is also really good and he’s been such a huge influence on so many artists i love. A lot of his stuff doesn’t do much for me right enough and don’t think he was a great person.
saw him live at hop farm where he spent most of the time berating his band, i really enjoyed the gig right enough. 4
Listened to him a fair bit for a while as a natural extension of VU obsession - his early stuff and also contemporary trio of NY, Drella and Magic&Loss. Looking at the list of albums surprised by how many I have heard - 11, must have all been available from the library.
It’s been a long time though since I listened to his stuff, I’m thoroughly bored of the big hits even though they are great pop songs and more generally I don’t think I ever properly connected with it and just kind of got bored more generally with that kind of very forceful direct mode of song writing with an air of machismo.
Was that the Morrissey day? If so, I did not enjoy that show. Think I gave up halfway through and went to watch someone in the tent instead, probably Guillemots.
Really like Transformer and Berlin, haven’t really explored much further as when I do its usually terrible. Plus he is by all accounts a bad 'un. He is responsible for one of my favourite covers though. Probably a 3 from me.
Don’t think any other artist that is so critically acclaimed has written so much absolute utter shite.
1/5.
Had to give him 5/5 just for Berlin.
Saw him at The Royal Festival Hall in 2012. He was crap then. He did a musak version of Walk On The Wild Side. A dull gig…but y’know…Berlin is amazing.
Was that 2006 or so? So dull. Saw him a year later doing all of Berlin in Hammersmith however which was great.
Definitely a 5. Peaks and troughs for sure, but the peaks rank alongside the best of any artist.
Some good ones here. Would have posted Street Hassle and Coney Island Baby too, both of which are phenomenal.
I AM THE TABLE/5
which has got me thinking, surely there is a Lou Reed/Metallica/Dudley Boys crossover out there somewhere?!
oh my god. will be watching this shortly!!!
think its quite interesting how metal machine music has this reputation for being this impenetrable harsh noise joke record, when its actually a really interesting and textured thing and not even that difficult if youre into your noise and ambient shit
I like the first couple of VU albums so I always think I like Lou Reed. But the later VU albums don’t do much for me, and Transformer and Berlin are ok but I’m not that fussed. I bought Berlin expecting a really exciting classic album, and it starts well (Lady Day is great) but I lose interest as it goes on.
I think after the first couple of VU albums his voice isn’t really suited to the music he’s writing.
John Cale > Lou Reed

This, literally not listened to another thing by him solo. I’ll do so today.
When I bring a book into the bathroom I like to say I’m going for a Loo Read
Yeah, that’s nice stuff
Really enjoy Transformer, Berlin and Coney Island Baby. Reckon I have listened to less than 3 of his other albums all the way through, not because I know their shit just because. Weird.
Might have a look and learn for myself they are mostly shit over the next few days.
I said “I wanna be a singer like Lou Reed”
“I like Lou Reed, 3/5” she said,
Sticking her tongue in my ear
