My Orbital top from the Ally Pally all nighter on New Year’s Eve 1996. The oldest clothing I own. Still looks good (to me) and I still wear it.

I was listening to the Middle of Nowhere last night and it’s soooo good. I haven’t listened to it in years and that was silly.

This is a beast of a track.

It’s quite a familiar story on here, but along with Leftfield, Underworld, Chemicals and The Prodigy they really did turn me from ‘proper music has guitars’ into someone who loved, and still loves dance/electronic. Absolutely rinsed the Brown album back in the day. It has some just beautiful spine tingling moments.

Saw them at Glastonbury in 1994 and yeah, it really proved that electronic music works live.

I went to that show and bought that top! We had a return coach to Bristol so had to go the distance. By the end I was tired and freezing. Plus they had the clever idea of putting The Chemical Brothers (who were DJing) in a small room. Got nowhere near it.

Yeah. That was a bloody freezing night.

I may have taken some illegal substances and remember I went on an indoor fairground ride.

I think Orbital finished playing after midnight and might have played Chime at the turn of the year. Yeah, I remember the entire main hall then tried to go over to a smaller room to see The Chemical Brothers but there was a complete stand still and a minor crush in the corridors there. I didn’t get anywhere near wherever it was either.

Can confirm that your recollection re: Chime is correct.

It’s interesting to me that the Blue Album is catching so much flack in this thread when it was actually a considerable improvement on the previous album, The Alltogether, which remains Orbital’s only real misstep in 30 years, and even that album is redeemable if you get hold of the two disc version - much like Monsters Exist, there’s a better album in the b-material.

Blue Album, though - Transient, You Lot, Acid Pants, One Perfect Sunrise - all classic Orbital tracks.

@UncleRetrospective what are your 2 playlist picks please?

The Blue Album is really dull throughout for me, whereas The Altogether’s good bits are great.

Oh, this version of the Box is amazing. The way they time the fireworks to the techno drop was so good

It’s 4.11. Not bad at all.

Alongside Cocteau Twins, Wu-Tang Clan and Prince. Damn happy with that!

Highest Dance act. 4th highest electronica, with no shame in falling behind kraftwerk, aphex twin or BOC.

Don’t think the best electronic act have been featured yet. Orbital a very good but they don’t feature enough tarot cards, circular moving chairs and strange masks.

Ban request.
