šŸŽµ How Good Are They Really šŸŽµ Soundgarden

It was their time, things work like that, and they took that, not as an opportunist thing, but, I’m not sure…it just really was time in the rotation of bands from that genre for them to step up, and when they did, they did so with so much grace. The song, being accessible works, but we all know there is some dark shit in a song that does get ridiculed to an extent. Maybe you needed to be experiencing that time, but they stepped up for sure and delivered. I think is an outstanding song.

Knowing we have quite a bit of overlap in music taste I would recommend you give superunknown and badmotorfinger a bit of your time. Think you’ll enjoy them in retrospect.

Yep, will do. I know a handful of songs. I have heard Superunknown once, in the 90’s. Cool thing about these threads is what music means to others and feeding off that a bit and picking up on the influence and passion. I have enjoyed reading your posts in this thread.

Pure nostalgia with this lot. A very underrated band in many ways. The guitar was heavy metal, the bass player a hardcore punk, the drummer liked everything and the singer was a singer in the conventional sense i.e vocals having more in common with the likes of Robert Plant and Freddie Mercury than Cobain and Vedder etc.

Ultramega - A great offbeat punk that sounds much better after that remaster a few years ago. Would have been better if they left off the Howlin Wolf cover.

Louder Than Love - One of the most frontloaded albums I’ve ever heard. Side 1 excellent - side 2 forgettable.

Badmotorfinger - Another front loaded album but with a catch. The first five songs are as good are practically untouchable. The rest of the album is great. But seriously those first five songs…

Superunknown - Front to back, one of the greatest albums of all time, as retro as it sounds it hasn’t dated a bit. And it’s probably the most depressing mainstream hard rock album ever made. And its definitely the last great grunge album made bringing an end to that era of dominance that started with Nevermind.

Down on the upside - good but could lose three songs.

King Animal - A miserable Foo Fighters album.

If you want to know how important Soundgarden are consider this - Back in the 90s they were seen as the heirs to Sabbath/Zeppelin etc from twenty years earlier. Twenty years later who are the heirs to Soundgarden? There isnt any if you think about it. In many ways they were the last of their kind.

No one sings like you any more…

Bro you got me all in tears. Beautiful post and memories. That concert sounds like something from a dream.

Black hole sun is a masterpiece. Every time I hear it still to this day I think uhhhh how was THAT a radio/pop hit? And then think how much weirder it would sound on the radio right now.

This is really accurate and it makes me sad that they couldn’t find the magic together. Handful of keepers you could make an ok ep out of i reckon. I actually really love shadow of the sun, I remember falling for it after it was used in the movie ā€˜collateral.’

Interested to hear more than ā€œnoā€ from @Kallgeese on why they’re not a fan. Seems like a band you’d like or at least respect!

In the outro to My Wave, the drums, bass and guitar are all playing in different time signatures. And it was a single when they were massive!

Great band, just so great.

Black Hole Sun is a staple for singing the kids to sleep

I see that I’m the only one to select it in the song poll, and I don’t think it’s been mentioned since - so I’ve got to pop my favourite Soundgarden song in here.

That riff! The heaviness of the rhythm section! The Fun House ish saxophone skronk that it can only logically conclude with! Love it.

Sharif at school got me into them but secretly they never quite totally clicked. Have quite fond memories of playing the first resident evil on playstation and listening to ā€˜the day I tried to live’ a whole lot of times. Think they were my third or fourth ever gig and occasionally I meet people who bring that gig up as an all-timer but it was pretty average.

Just not punk and unhinged enough in terms of what I want from loud music. All just personal foibles though, innit?

Still getting at least a 3 though.

Listening to Badmotorfinger right now, I don’t know how I keep forgetting how great the second half is (it’s because those first five songs are so relentless).

Such a great song

Sorry I was out watching a terrible football match. Score time!

Yeah this is my fave too, so crushingly heavy.

Love that sustained guitar note underneath it all too, it makes it sound so apocalyptic and windswept. Amazing song.

Also forgot how great Louder Than Love is. His voice is terrifying when he does his older upper register wail, especially when it floats over a riff like this.

Ugly Truth and Loud Love are both amazing songs but I’ve never really connected with it in the same way as Badmotorfinger or Superunknown.

Same here, I think partially because I got it so much later than the others and because the others really are perfect. The second half is also kind of difficult and shies away from hooks, Big Dumb Sex excluded.
