yeah Coming Up is a superb album (still remember being blown away by the Trash video/song, my first encounter with the band), and By The Sea/Picnic by the Motorway provide the depth to what might otherwise come across as a slight-seeming ā€˜pop’ record

Just remembered they were The London Suede, in the US at least, not sure if that’s still the case.

That remains the case, yep. And apparently that’s why they rarely play the States - as they hate the name!

Surely more to do with a lack of popularity

I’ve actually never a heard a Suede song before, but since they got the objectively best score of 3.30, I’m going to give the debut a shot this week.

I remember reading ā€˜Britpop, Blair & The Demise of English Rock’ by John Harris (great book) and Alex James says something like ā€œBernard Butler was really annoying wasn’t he? It was all long hair, cowboy boots and guitar solosā€ haha.

Yeah, disc 2 has some great stuff like ā€˜Europe is Our Playground’ (although, the original b-side version is better and ā€˜Another No-One’.

The Tears album could have been great if it was a bit shorter. Some great songs on it.

The thread I’m saddest to have missed. As others have said, awesome early albums (I like Coming Up though!), dodgy middle, decent comeback (although I’m yet to find the Britpop comeback album that really does it for me). But the early albums / Sci Fi Lullabies were life changing and I absolutely murdered them between 2010 and 2013, just listening to them and Blur and Pulp over and over again. Pretty sure I put a Brett quote in my Cool Britannia/English nationalism dissertation which has ended up being way more relevant to the national climate since I wrote it, oops.

The Drowners is my favourite single (released in the week I was born, fun fact) but Animal Nitrate isn’t far behind, DMS is best album though. Once made a list of 50 things I loved about their Brits performance of Animal Nitrate. cried loads after I saw them live (at a festival 5 mins from my parents house - went by myself and spent 8 hours wangling myself to the front of the crowd, right in the middle), it was so good and I’ve been desperate to see them again since.

People on the Suede forum were really mean and over serious but they are a big sexy 5 for me. Second only to Blur in terms of favourite bands.

Also: this band that had been successful in the UK with their first two albums replaced their guitarist with a 17 y/o schoolboy whose previous band were called The Poole Grammar Stompers and whose first gig was… Suede. He’d learned his entire playing style from Bernard Butler.

I reckon the fact he was 17 probably helped. If he was in his 30s, the complete mimicking of someone else’s style might have come across as contrived!

can you remember what the Brett quote was?

I think it was about how the roads in the US are laid out in blocks which is really unimaginative whereas Britain’s are laid out in a really arcane, random way which is more interesting to him

Without doubt the musical act with the most reissuing and rehashing of old material. Especially if you apply the ratio of actual albums:reissues.

Last year for RSD they reissued the debut for the nth time … but with The London Suede as the band name!

Yeah, since Suede did a deal with Demon about 10 years ago there has been a ridiculous amount of re-issues.
