Itās an interesting watch but just goes to show anyone can make a video really. The only thing I really get in this whole video is the R.E.M. - Green comparison, same label, same time, they were a lot more accessible than HD and that shows in sales. Green is probably a better album than Candy Apple Grey, which is one of HDās lesser albums in all fairness. I just cannot put Green Day in the same bracket as HD at all.
Itās not an indictment on Hüsker Dü that they inspired Green Day dude
Theyāre arguably the next generationās version, whether you like them or not the influence is very clearly there
Disagree respectfully. Husker Du are a psychedelic band that push Hardcore by bleeding melody into and a very unique sound. Their use of noise and speed and harmony is quite unparalleled. Iāll take they influenced Nirvana as they continue what HD started well. Green Day are a needless rehash of many things that sold millions of records yet offer little.
Just because Green Day werenāt as āoriginalā - whatever that is - doesnāt make them any less valid, the fact they were able to take bands like Hüsker Dü (and Jawbreaker)'s influence (and even covering the former) to a larger audience is a pretty big deal no? They may well have been the beneficiaries of good timing and taking that sound and making it more palatable but theyāve quite clearly acknowledged who came before and shaped them. Green Day were just another late 80s DIY punk band (from California) too once upon a time, and three reason they were able to sell millions of records is thanks to bands like Hüsker Dü
Partially agree, partially disagree. Original music is pretty clear though and thatās not Green Day, Iāve never felt them instinctively as genuine - but I get that people like them, they just are not for me and never will be.
Thereās a right place for this discussion not that I mind interacting with you anytime because I like your opinions. We need a Husker Du HGATR and Iām not getting why that canāt be delivered - itās overdue and these boards are for everyone.
I believe the reasoning is because it would just be you and I having this conversation
Also Hüsker Dü are as original as Green Day, or the Beatles, or the hardcore scene around them. Originality doesnāt really mean anything, everything is taken from somewhere, some just do it better than others
I believe many people would discuss Husker Du in a HGATR thread. I believe it would be a valid thread and whatever direction it takes is up to the users of these boards. The right place to thrash this all out will be there, not that I mind, Iād just like to see it sanctioned and read what many people think.
I think originality does matter or perhaps just that sense of genuine artistic release, regardless of genre. Green Day generationally offer me nothing. I could go on but will save that for a thread we may never see.
Iām glad you acknowledge that itās generational (I know we had a similar conversation about this recently) but I will, again, state that Green Day are as genuine are.(or were, at least) anyone else
Well, I was fortunate enough to see Husker Du when I was 16 and again at 17, that is not a boast, it just underlines how much they, the first time I saw them especially, changed everything for me as far music goes. I really could go on⦠but the right thread does not exist and I am not getting why itās being held up so much.
Green Day were my first show when I was 13 so, as you say, itās generational
Itās not fully generational and GD as a 1st gig at 13 I get would have been something else. I just do not really get what they do, never have, never will.
The best music transcends generations and is clear to the ear for all?
Last call for alcohol, last call for freedom of speech. Cāmon @anon19035908 letās do this, I have a much needed day off tomorrow. Du bring the Huskersā¦
I know who it is tomorrow and unfortunately it is not your boys butā¦is mine
And no thereās no quantifiable ābestā and generations will always misunderstand each other
How do you know?
My time is limited and I really enjoy the HGATR thread by enlarge and think Funky does a great job. I do not understand why certain threads / requests are held up though. These are universal boards and the idea of a day off and a HGATR Husker Du thread whets my appetite a lot, but hey the control is with other so Iāll be cool with that.
Timing.
I donāt misunderstand generational changes, I just know what I feel is genuine and pushes music on, that is not a dig, you are frank, direct and consistent, which I appreciate.
Because Funkman messaged me about it knowing itās going to be a big one for me.
Iād like to see a Hüsker Dü thread too largely because I do think theyāre important and Iām not sure how much Iāve actually imparted my opinion on them BUT, I do get that it might not be the most exciting thread for a lot of people here (just a guess, donāt know unless it happens) because theyāre not massively talked about on here. Thereās loads of bands Iād love to talk about endlessly through the HGATR medium but know it would only appeal to a handful of people at most, so just having a dedicated thread might be better for that discussion.
Green Day did push music on, even if it inspired a load of shite.
Also I missed the early iterations of the thread including Green Day so Iām annoyed I didnāt get to state my case at the time
Iām never particularly sure about this line of argument, that you can justify some bands by their bigging up and providing access to some other, better bands. Comes up all the time, not getting at you. Understand the value of some bands as a gateway to hearing about other stuff, but canāt help but think that most people would have found thier way there anyway.
There was a Cher HGATR, not sure if that is a more important discussion than Husker Du?
I just fell requests should be listened to, I get thereās a lot of traffic, but hey.
Maybe, sure, but they still were a gateway band for many however you spin it
