Think you posted that and my post nominating it at the same time ![]()
Indeed! The stars were aligned! ![]()
I quite like Today but I find it a bit too sweet, some great moments though. She Knows Me Too Well is an interesting one, the pov of someone who’s absolute poison (unsurprisingly a Love lyric) but presented in Brian’s usual impeccable fashion. I got it on a twofer with Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!) which came out the same year, it sure is patchy but there’s some worthwhile stuff on there too if you like looking for clues pointing to Pet Sounds, I’m particularly a fan of this one
If I could have two more song nominations they would go to this pair of diamonds, Holland - Dozier - Holland had a great year!
My top 5 albums this year are coming from The Beatles, The Byrds, and The Rolling Stones. It’s the first year I’ve even heard more than 5 albums from, to be honest. Looks I’ve got 15 according to RYM, and half of them are just average. Bands that were getting their sound down and would go on to do better, like The Kinks, The Moody Blues, The Pretty Things, The Zombies, The Who, etc. Overall a good year for this kind of music, but I could stand to expand my horizons a bit eventually. Not a jazz fan though, so that limits it already as far as checking out overlooked classics. I should explore more soul…I know plenty of singles, but no albums.
Those first 3 bands I mentioned, along with The Kinks, are firmly planted in my last.fm top 10 artists (since I started tracking in 2006), thanks to some discovery and exploration periods for all 4 artists in the last part of the 00s, as I hadn’t listened to them much before that as a younger adult. Revisiting these 1965 albums this week is only going to ensure they stay in the top 10 even longer. Not that I’m necessarily trying to get them out, but it’s crazy how long they’ve stayed there.
For those into a bit of Delta Blues (and not be-bop jazz) - the real thing as opposed to the Jack White faux stuff - then this is a classic from '65: The Legendary (Indeed!) Son House’s Father of Folk Blues. This is the knee at which Robert Johnson learned his trade. Best I can do on Deezer is this, compiled by a fan from different sources until Deezer puts up the actual album. So good!
I am not an authority by any means on the 60s - seems I preferred some other years in the 60s looking at my collection but still these are my top 5
- John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
- Andrew Hill - Point of departure
- Bert Jansch - st
- Bob Dylan - Highway 61 revisited
- Bob Dylan - Bringing it all back home
Track: can’t really separate them but John Coltrane - Resolution
An incredible year for jazz, with one of the undisputed best records of all time already nominated, but I think I could happily make a Desert Island Discs list of only '65 jazz and be all set.
Having a look about for suggestions for this thread and my first call is usually to look for whatever was going on in Brazil at a given time as I love the music so much.
This is one I’ve meant to give a go for a long time but haven’t until now - fantastic jazz with Afro-Brazilian rhythm and percussion, exactly what I want to listen to this morning.
Moacir Santos - Coisas
Jazz newcomer here but it seems like anything Joe Henderson was involved in is worth listening to.
Just updated the nominations - and it’s been a very quiet thread and yet again I’ve been too busy to drive it this past week; I’ll allow two nominations per person again to get numbers up (seems like this might need to be a thing for the early years as the threads don’t get nearly as much traffic as the 21st century).
I’ll Nominate Albums:
Vince Guaraldi - A Charlie Brown Christmas
The Horace Silver Quintet - Song for My Father
and Songs:
The Mamas & The Papas - California Dreamin’
James Brown - I Got You (I Feel Good)
I haven’t nominated any albums so I’ll go for
Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Byrds - Mr Tambourine Man
My 2nd…
Album Nomination: Sun Ra - The Heliocentric World of Sun Ra Volume 1
Album nomination
Nina Simone - Pastel Blues
An incredible final pair of tracks on this album, a stark and powerful rendition of Strange Fruit followed by 10 frantic minutes of Sinnerman. If anyone wanted an introduction to Nina’s music I think that one-two would be a great place to start.
Ah, we have a second nomination - excellent - so for clarity:
Album Nomination #1: Thelonious Monk - Solo Monk
Album Nomination #2: The Legendary Son House - Father of Folk Blues
Track Nomination #1: Bob Dylan - Ballad of a Thin Man
Track Nomination #2: Bob Dylan - Subterranean Homesick Blues
Track nomination #1 Martha and the Vandellas - Nowhere to Run
Was amused a couple of weeks ago because my niece picked up a Bow Wow Wow record from a car boot sale and have just found out this from ‘65 is the original of their hit.
Is 65 the earliest year you are covering?
From the lists it’s interesting that jazz seems to dominate up to 65 then rock starts to take over in 66.
