I remember the release of this album well - I was 9 and was very very impressed at how cool I was for listening to it. My friend Brent Pantalone and I played it on his boom box to annoy his next door neighbours with whom his parents were having some property line dispute, and it escalated to the point where the man next door grabbed poor Brent by the shoulders and shook him a bit violently. Screams were made, cops were called… fun times!

Seem to be at a bit of a level with most years in the 80s - maybe 15 to 20 albums I really like and then a few random single gems and oddities from various compilations.

Been a bit obsessed recently with this single from ā€˜86 so am going straight in with my single nomination being Coldreams - Morning Rain

Yeah, gonna struggle with this one. Was always going to with the majority of the dross the 80’s threw up. Lots of stuff that’s just ok and the two albums I listen to maybe once every couple of years have already been picked.

Damn you, eighties!

Do you actually like the Eddie Murphy song?

I love it - it’s a Rick James song, what’s not to like?

I also specifically love the fact that in 1986 there were so few media channels that you could hear both Eddie Murphy & this

On Radio 1

Oh nothing, was a genuine q as I havent heard before. Just thought Eddie’s musical efforts were considered a bit bizarre? Seem to recall a weird effort with Jacko (not the Egyptian set video an actual song together)?

Yeah, he’s obviously a rubbish singer but it’s a good song and anything Rick James is hilarious/brilliant. Plus, it was such a massive hit in the states - the 7th best selling song of the year according to Billboard - that the whole thing comes off like some extremely well executed dadaist prank. All in all pretty joyful

I gots another of me playlists of the best top 40 hits - not a vintage year

Will nominate this as best song if nobody else has

Reckon I’d be surprised if I own a single album from 1986

I’m looking through the hip hop releases and even that’s limited. Licenced To Ill is the obvious one, as well as Raising Hell too obviously (although i’ve never been a big Run DMC album fan).

May sit this one out.
