Loved Jilted Generation, and even though it’s a bit dated, Experience, but FOTL never grabbed me in the same way. Some of it bangs, some of it leaves me cold.
Listened to this all the way through for the first time in aaaaaages last week. Still great.
Diesel Power is still my go to for testing a new pair of headphones.
Think I was the right age for it - would have turned 14 that year so Firestarter and Breathe felt impossibly exciting. Very difficult to be objective when that nostalgia hits.
…although yeah, these days I’m probably more likely to reach for Jilted Generation
I was about the same age, and yes, those two songs were fresh as anything, can’t remember why some of the rest of the album fell flat for me. No Good was probably the first time i loved a dance music track. I remember being really confused at liking it so much, as it wasn’t a guitar band track! I guess it probably had that ‘first love’ type syndrome.
Think it definitely helped that FOTL was the dance record that guitar-music-is-the-only-real-music twats (like my 14 year old self) all agreed was great.
Dig Your Own Hole also came out that year…
In my rockist little bubble I probably wasn’t quite ready for it, took a little while longer to get the Chemical Brothers. As I listen to mostly electronic stuff these days, it’s weird to think back on how off-putting I found samplers and synths as a teen. Music fandom was a lot more tribal then though.
might be reaching for something that wasn’t unusual, but i think there was a lot of ‘doing things big’ in music this year. maybe it was a high point for labels splashing cash…

Oops, I stuck your album and song in the wrong way round. Have the Smith album and Warhols single noted.
Hi,
Dry the Rain’s the one to go for - although any of them would do ![]()
Surely we’re gonna have Biggie - Hypnotize on this?
Some strong albums not nominated yet:

We certainly should do - I’ll take this as your nomination?
Here’s a playlist from Music League where we had a songs from 1997 round earlier this year if anyone wants further inspiration:
If we were nominating more than one album I’d definitely pick Substrata.
Or one from the top row and 5 from anywhere else please, Carol ![]()
This is an album i’ve been meaning to listen to for a long time. Definitely gonna get round to listening to it at some point this week
