How Good Was The Year (in music) - 1997?

Yeah this is hard to narrow down and a lot of good stuff has been mentioned…was tempted with this as my song pick…

but i think its actually going to be Bis for the song!

Albums have been covered pretty well to be honest. I was tempted with this, the best Mayhem release but its only an EP…

so i have settled on His Hero is Gone - Monument to Thieves

Nominate Album: His Hero is Gone - Monument to Thieves
Nominate Song: Bis - Sweet Shop Avengerz

Great thread cheers @Octobadger :+1:

Polls are go! I’ve inferred a couple of nominations where people mentioned a fave album or song without explicitly nominated. Made a songs playlist but not bothering with an album one as I don’t expect anyone will have time to listen to thirty albums in 24 hours…

I’d never heard of this album before and it is definitely my discovery of this thread. This is seems to be a perfect blend of where my musical tastes have got to today after many years of adjustment - might have got here a lot earlier if I’d heard this in 1997!

Just realised I ballsed up the poll by putting Daft Punk in instead of Erykah Badu - sorry!

A few other bangers which nobody has called out.

No worries! Would’ve voted for DP anyway as it’s one of my favourites ever. Erykah definitely in there though. 1997 was crazy

Another absolute scorcher from '97

Great for fans of the heavier end of '97 era Daft Punk

I know we’re into the voting portion of proceedings now, but a few more dancey bits and bobs worth mentioning

Yeah, 1997 is stacked. It’s a shame neither Transistor or S/T came out this year, I’d have no problem calling either AOTY.

Feeling like I’ve let down my boys today, so here are two classics from a genuine 10/10 album for anyone interested:

Gabriel you know. What a track. Another absolute all timer

Ooh, I had forgotten about some of those. I liked that BT tune as part of my Robert Miles / Chicane dance music phase. (Actually, Robert Miles had an album in 1997 which I bought, but couldn’t make myself like as much).

And Sunchyme was another fun single that I bought and loved then!

Dario G were from Cheshire like me so my peers and I all felt some weird affinity with them and that track. It’s still a banger. And, I would argue, a better use of the sample than the original source.

Here’s a couple of mellow piano moments from 1997, from Faith No More and the singer from Bad Religion.

I’d never heard that version of Cease before looking through the lists of music for that year. It’s quite beautiful.

Listened to Around the Fur this morning, definitely should have been represented. A timeless blast of anger.

Best song of 1997 is Teeth Like God’s Shoeshine by Modest Mouse.

One from each album in no order other than the order happened to list the albums originally:

Built to Spill - Velvet Waltz
Radiohead - Paranoid Android
Deftones - Headup
Elliott Smith - Say Yes
311 - Use of Time
Live - Lakini’s Juice
Ben Folds Five - Evaporated
Feeder - My Perfect Day
Everclear - Sunflowers
Our Lady Peace - Clumsy
Mogwai - Mogwai Fear Satan
Bardo Pond - Tommy Gun Angel
Blink182 - Lemmings
Foo Fighters - Hey Johnny Park (best non Everlong song)
Getup Kids - Shorty
Green Day - Scattered
Godspeed - too hard to think of in terms of songs
Yo La Tengo - We’re An American Band

And of course The End Is the Beginning Is the End by The Smashing Pumpkins
