Was surprised to realise these threads have been running for over 4 years now. The schedule is all over the place due to life stuff, but I’ve been enjoying taking the time to dig in to some unknown pleasures and reliving the classics, and glad that plenty of you still seem to enjoy doing the same.

In the last thread, 1980 polled really well, placing 4th in the leaderboard (which is now 47 years out of the 60 we’ll be covering in this series) with a strong score of 8.83.

For the second thread in a row we are taking an exactly 20 year jump forward, as we turn our attention to the dawn of the new millennium as we all meet up in the year 2000.

A reminder of the premise of the thread

After a period of posting and reminiscing, Polls will be posted to rate the music of the year out of ten (based on the albums, singles, gigs, whatever that stand out for you that year) and voting for your favourite of the nominated albums and songs.

Everyone can nominate one album and one song from the year which will then be collated into side-polls which will be open for a few days - please make it clear when you post a nomination for the poll (as opposed to when just posting about songs and albums you like, which are very welcome).

2000 was the year the millennium bug failed to materialise but the ILOVEYOU virus managed to create upwards of $10 billion in damage, 113 people died in the first crash of a Concorde jet, serial killing English doctor Harold Shipman was jailed for life, Slobodan Milošević was overthrown in Serbia and Madonna married Guy Ritchie in a castle in Scotland.

We said goodbye to Alec Guiness, Walter Matthau, Yokozuna, Kirsty Maccoll, John Gielgud, Paula Yates and Stanley Matthews, and hello to Erling Haaland, Beabadoobee, Ice Spice, Halle Bailey, Addison Rae and Phil Foden.

But how good was the music?

Ooooft, how to choose? One of the greatest years in the history of recorded music. Think there’s at least 4 albums that would now crack my all time Top-10. A dozen more stone cold classics.

I do think this post-Britpop pre-Strokes period is really interesting in its own way, a lot of odd things were thrown at the wall and came to prominence. For instance, imagine hearing Lamacq or Peel mention a 7" from a new Glasgow band nobody seems to know anything about, and then this happens.

I’ll need to think about this one. I was very much in my alternative country phase and my favourite album of 2000 was probably ‘Heartbreaker’ but that’s now out of contention.
