[bangs desk] good meeting!
To help with log of areas for testing, Iâve made a start to an overview of the different elements of the forums - like a visual site map. Can email an invite to anyone who wants to help make this more throughj.
Know this is a rather big request from a minor member here, but another forum I am part of (Popjustice) is closing soon, and as you can imagine the members are looking at alternatives.
The owner, Peter, referenced DIS as a good model, and I quite like how Discourse is set up here. Wondered if any of the techies involved in the migration a couple of years ago would be willing to lend some time to give advice for us, approximation of installation costs and current monthly costs.
Oh no thatâs a shame ![]()
27th April it shuts isnât it? Quite sad, but Popjustice wasnât the same once X Factor started dying and he wasnât doing the play sheets for the live shows
Yeah, so the server is with Fasthosts - weâre on a package that they donât actually sell now, but the closest equivalent is their VPS 8 package.
Weâve also had to get a Sendmail account and weâve got AWS S3 setup to minimise the cost of images - not sure of the cost of those as theyâre usage based, Sean obviously pays the bills. If you can use the popjustice domain, then thereâs no cost there, but youâll need access to the DNS configuration, otherwise youâll need to factor in a domain too.
To make it work you probably want a couple of people comfortable with basic Linux/Unix and cloud infrastructure who can setup docker/discourse on the server and occasionally log in to run upgrades or install plugins and then a team who can work together on managing the community - setting up the boards, user roles etc the way that suits you guys. And of course, someone happy to be on the line for the bills.
Iâm gonna be away soon so canât be hands on in helping, but happy to chat to anyone who has setup questions etc.
Oh no i like popjustice ![]()
