Jamos's 100 Greatest Rap Songs (2000 - 2024)

Bouncin Back should at least be honourable mentions imo. Banger.

92. Action Bronson & Riff Raff - Bird On A Wire (2012)

nothing big or clever, just a couple of goofballs dropping quotables over a great beat. sometimes that’s all it needs to be

honourable mentions: bronson - “not enough words”, “contemporary man”, “strictly 4 my jeeps”; riff raff - “versace python”

trying to limit the hon menchies to a track per album but yeah, you’re not wrong

91. Gucci Mane - My Kitchen (2007)

no pad, no pencil, just a madman in a booth spitting straight fire. can’t say i kept up with everything he was dropping (did anyone?) and can’t say i even liked a decent percentage of it, but the good stuff like this was utterly gamechanging.

honourable mentions: “swing my door”, “16 fever”, “on deck”, “my shadow”

90. Black Moon - Stay Real (2003)

was going to call this old man rap but that’s not fair really, it was only ten years after their classic debut. it’s just that by 2003, the hip-hop world had kinda moved on from this sort of NY street rap. they also unluckily got a bit mogged by jay-z using the same sample shortly after them. still, regardless of contemporary trends and unfortunate coincidences, it’s a great song.

honourable mentions: “looking down the barrel”, “creep wit me”

fav: Action - Bird on a Wire. Just so smooth, love Action over melodic stuff like this
least fav: Mystikal - Danger. Not grabbed by the beat or flow, bit annoying
best discovery: dälek - Ever Somber. What is this shoegaze-ass beat? Amazing
best artwork: Louie V Mob, couldn’t match the music any better

had fun with this run, i’d never put on Gucci or Drakeo but both got such cool weird beats and engaging flows. Nice to get little tasters and reminders of their style

completely forgot about Angel Haze but hearing that was such a throwback, took me right back to when my taste was nearly entirely directed by P4K’s best track lists. Glory days

Didn’t Angel Haze’s career trajectory get wrecked by Azaelia Banks feuding with her back when she was seen as the decisive one in her feuds?

the banks stuff might not have helped but i think it was more that she just dropped a brick for her debut album

Thought he’d be higher. Obvs I know this is a fun list and ranking’s not the point (or even important) so it’s not like it’s a big deal, but think he’s one of the most influential rappers of the last 25 years. He’s so distinctive too - can rap over anything. Could have picked at least ten different tunes to represent him, all of them would have sounded pretty different, but all would absolutely be him and no one else.

I mean you can put him over some witch house and he still destroys

think you could make a strong case for him, alongside wayne, being the most influential rapper of this period. think he suffers from having a lot of songs i like but none i love in the same way i love stuff that he’s influenced. also i’m an idiot and i don’t know anything so these rankings will reflect that!

not heard that remix before, like it a lot. maybe i’m a witch house guy now

89. N.O.R.E. feat. Pharrell - Nothin’ (2002)

the noreaga x neptunes connection was pretty unbeatable for a while there. this is one of their best beats imo, and skateboard p comes through with a memorable hook too

honourable mentions: “grimey”, “nore shot somebody”, “kenny powers”

Yeah totally. Probably have to throw Kanye and Young Thug in the mix too, but it’s one of them for sure. All of them absolutely massive

That beat innit. Close call but probably my favourite Neptunes. Sounded like outer space music at the time

Basically ten years plus of rap sounding like Future now too tbf

88. Nicki Minaj - Lookin’ Ass (2014)

nicki is responsible for a lot of utterly terrible music, so it’s easy to forget that when she feels like it she can rap her ass off. wish she’d let rip like this more often but unfortunately the terrible songs have often been incredibly successful

honourable mentions: “warning”, “beez in the trap”, “i get crazy”, “truffle butter”
