June Film Thread 2020

How are we feeling about our setups now you’re watching solely at home?

I’ve got a decent telly but the living room is really bright and I’m on a main road so there’s tons of noise. Tend to watch with noise cancelling headphones on but it’s not ideal.

  • I am satisfied with my home viewing setup
  • It’s ok but could be better
  • Not good enough

There really isn’t much else to do at the moment!

I’d get more in but my girlfriend is much more of tv watcher than a film watcher and I have to respectfully share the telly, whilst also trying to get some gaming time in.

Quite happy with the ps4 and tv, esp since I discovered I can watch with headphones! I usually watch films late and night and spikes in volume often led me to awkwardly rushing to turn the volume down as not to wake people

Projector with decent Bluetooth speaker - yay
Living room being so bright we literally can’t use it until 9pm - boo

Really REALLY must get on board with this. Settle on the bed about 9ish and have a flick through the 326429342 films on Netflix that I haven’t seen (and like, I’ve seen fuck all of the established BEST FILM EVERs) and then still end up watching four episodes of It’s Always Sunny… that I’ve seen eight times before, or something like Ender’s Game and falling asleep.

Though sometimes moths come in to look at the telly and the excellent films I’m watching

My routine is:

Check Amazon
Check Netflix
Check Mubi
Check iplayer
Make mental shortlist
Check them all again
Start a film and stop during production logos
Check them all again
Finally choose a film or just sack it off completely (about 50/50)

YES. Exactly this. But it’s 90/10 that I’ll just rewatch something so I can also check DiS on my phone and not really have to pay attention.

I think I like far too many “youth lit” films for a man in his 30s. Hunger Games, Maze Runner, Divergent, Ender’s Game. All that stuff. Yeah, brutally kill each other you baby-faced bastards… life only GETS WORSE.

my process is similar but also involves typing the film title into the DiS search bar to see if it comes recommended on here

I scrub forward through films a lot to find random 30 second segments to see if I like the mood and if I’ll actually commit to it on that specific day, though only through the first third or so of the run time to avoid many spoilers

Such a weird habit

this just reminded me of what I miss most about the Harmontown podcast

best: the platform (2019)

Sacked off Disney+ because I realised I didn’t have the mental fortitude to watch all the Marvel ones I’d not seen (which is a lot). Just too overwhelming. Got 10 minutes into… Civil War (?) and realised I didn’t have the faintest fucking idea who anyone was or what was going on, and sacked it off and let the free trial expire. I really need to get into things at the time, or it’s completely lost on me. (Haven’t watched Breaking Bad, The Wire, Sopranos etc… just too much of it)

Had similar issues with goodfellas. Just a load of things happening you don’t give a shit about because of how completely unsympathetic everyone in it is. Both are bad films. Taxi driver treads the line really well though

12 new films.

Best: Viridiana, Saturday Night Fever

Worst: The Hustler, To Kill A Mockingbird

Every time someone here watches The Wolf of Wall Street the comment is basically ‘I wanted a PSA and got a film instead’

Not really though, is it?
