Lagos, Portugal

Heading here for a week with the TV and kids (10 and 6) in a fortnight, anyone been recently and got any tips/suggestions for things to visit/see?

Not been in a while but used to go there on family holidays. Fantastic memories, you’ll have a great time.

O Farnel was good and cheap for food.

O Escondidinho for bbq’d sardines

Can’t go wrong with beaches there. Loads of water activities.

Got pissed for the very first time in Eddie’s Bar. Probably not great for kids mind.

Museum was decent and air conditioned I think.

Fish market is good. Get there early.

Brilliant, thank you!

Nah Nah Bah looks ace.

Are you hiring a car? I’ve got loads of suggestions if you are. We didn’t make it to Lagos last year cause we only had a car when TVs Mum came out for the final 3 days we were there (they stayed on after they didn’t come out just for 3 days).

If you haven’t got a car you can get to some good places on the buses we tried them for the 1st time last year, only as far as Ferragudo cause the youngest was still napping, and they were really good, they are coaches rather than buses, think the 80 gets you to Portimao in 40 minutes.

Not bothering with a car, so will be relying on public transport for any long journeys.

I think you can get to Sagres and if you get to Portimao I think you should be able to get up to Silves, Alvor (just go on the beach there though the town has gone right down hill), Monchique.

Reckon kids would like the castle at Silves

Yeah the castle’s great and there’s a decent cafe/bistro place on those steps to the left as you come out and Storkes knocking around.

Haven’t been for years but my grandparents lived for decades in Praia da Luz, before it became world famous/notorious.

Maia Praia beach in Lagos is great, just massive and good for walking. Fish paste on the sourdough bread while waiting for your food is a must. Sagres is cool if you can get there, and the beaches on the Atlantic coast have incredible waves (we never surfed or anything, just jumped in them). Similarly, if you get up to Monchique there’s a lovely little spa town and amazing peri peri restaurants.

Oh yeah all the factory chimneys have stork nests on top, I loved that as a kid.

Most of the beaches along that coast have wooden boardwalks you can stroll along, makes it easier going than walking on sand (while still enjoying the sea views). I think we spent most of our time there in May walking along the beach for a while / seeing some different bits of the coast, then just chilling out and eating nice food.

The fort at Sagres was interesting to wander round and see some different plant life (I think it had its own micro-climate from the sea cliffs).

I had a swordfish steak at a little restaurant that was out of this world (and massive too). Can’t find the place on Google maps though.

Sorry that’s not more help
