Bolis Pupul – Room 2, Glasgow

A solo electronic show, not full after being bumped up to a bigger venue to due the original venue being unavailable, could feel a bit flat. Needn’t have worried though, a combination of a set that felt meticulously put together, fun visuals and just sheer charisma pulled it through – helped along at one point by a very enjoyable guest spot from his sister (I think). Extremely good vibes.

Gatecreeper at The Fleece

Three band bill, with Enforced being first up. These were ridiculous fun, very old school thrash whose influences appear to have begun and ended with Metallica’s No Life Till Leather demo. An absolute blast.

Then we had 200 Stab Wounds. I’d seen these before supporting Cat Decap, and liked them, but last night not so much. Seemed a bit….sterile? Maybe I’m just grumpy because I ended up wearing most of a can of Thatchers after I strayed too close to the pit., but yeah bit of a disappointment.

Gatecreeper though were bang on. A bit of death, a bit of doom, all great. A special shout out to the members of the audience representing for Halloween - first time I have ever seen a stage invader dressed as Wario taking a dive.

I plan on contributing 5-10 times before the year is out

I still get notifications for this thread even though I only started the original one, whereas this one was system generated :woman_shrugging:

Which is absolutely fine by me as it’s the best read on all of the boards :+1:

We’re missing about fifty or sixty entries a year from myself, don’t have time to be doing write-ups anymore unfortunately.

Last night’s gig was ā€œinterestingā€. The support, Rid Of Me, were decent. On the heavier side of ā€œgrungeā€, and had the tunes to back them up. When one of the guitarists launched himself into the crowd and triggered the old punks into a proper pit, I began to regret my position near the front though.

The headliners were Cherubs and I was less enthusiastic about them. The singer had a really annoyingly affected ā€œsquawkā€ of a voice. Like a cartoon parrot. And the music was just a bit sludgey and one-note. I gave them about 50 minutes and then decided to hit the road in an attempt to get home before 11 (I made it). Not photos of them as I stayed right back because the pit grew somewhat.

Iron and Wine - Cambridge Junction

First time seeing Iron and Wine in over 16 years. Thought he was on great form. Very amiable, good atmosphere with the audience. Really enjoyed his backing band and the various string and other arrangements. Previous time I saw him, it was a bit of a jazz-noodle mess but this was very different, tight and well-drilled.

My only nag is that I wish he’d stick to the melody on his old songs. He’s clearly capable of it because all the new songs were played straight, but it came as a relief when he sang the chorus of Flightless Bird, a capella

The shadow puppetry was very Portlandia but good fun, especially when we all noticed the similarities between one of the puppeteers and Sam Beam.

Lizzie No was enjoyable in support with a decent Halloween get-up.

Sum 41 and The Bronx at Wembley Arena

Not gonna lie, it was fucking great.

Yeah found this a bit annoying at times, the old songs that he played more straight were the highlights for me last week

Gazelle Twin and the London Contemporary Orchestra at the British Library

To do with the Medieval Women exhibition which just started there. It was good but I really didn’t want to be there for reasons. Second time I’ve seen a collaboration between the two but this was a Black Dog set. Not sure about the space, it had nice aesthetics but felt a bit impractical. There was also a constant hissing coming from somewhere which was quite jarring.

The Cure at The Troxy

Started at 8pm with Alone, then the new album in full. Finished with Boys Don’t Cry at 10:55pm after an intermission, another full set and 2 Cure sized (ie long) encores.

Absolutely joyful evening that I felt utterly privileged to be at. Got the same vibes from pretty much everyone else there too, loads of smiles and excitement.

Spotted loads of celebs - Stewart Lee, Boy George, Simon Armitage, Annie Mac plus some journalists I recognised. Sure there must have been more but those were the ones I saw. Also saw Vic Reeves on the train up but he wasn’t going to the gig.

Made the DLR with a minute to spare to be able to make the connection for my train home.

Interpol Antics 20th Anniversary Tour, Wolverhampton Halls

Antics came out when I was 23, I had recently got my first proper grown up full time job. I only saw Interpol twice during the TOTBL era, they were my favourite band and I was ready to spend every penny I had on seeing them as many times as possible to make up for it. And I saw them many, many times over the next few years (definitely one of those people that annoy Chrissie Hynde!).

I was very shy and thought I’d never meet people like me, but instantly bonded with the other fans and it felt like a really excellent party every night and was really transformative in my life.

After a personally difficult and traumatic year, this show was the nostalgia fest I needed. An emotional carthasis, was actually sobbing at points so god knows what people around me thought as this is seen as their more ā€˜upbeat’ danceable album (lyrics aren’t exactly cheery though).

Loved hearing songs like Next Exit for the first time in ages, possibly since the original tour. Had a brilliant time singing along with every word .

TLDR: live music is flipping amazing.

It really came across that way on the live stream.

Cuco at Earth Theatre

Been to a few gigs this year where I don’t know any of the music going in and they’ve all been pretty good, Cuco included!

I don’t think he’s had much chat here but for those who don’t know, he’s American with Mexican parents and his music is quite broad that I’d classify as soft indie pop, with a lot of rap and bossanova influences. It’s a bit soundcloudy but much dreamier. He’s one of those you’ve never heard of but he’s got multiple Youtube videos with over 4-10 million views, some over 100 mill. My girlfriend is a big fan which is how I know about his stuff.

This was a more intimate show than he apparently usually does and it was really chill, really nice. He has a great voice (pitched a bit higher than his recorded stuff) and lemme tell you we were all in his spell! Just a crowd of people swaying along as he sang (in Spanish and English). Lots of fun between-song chat and talking with the crowd too. I didn’t want it to end. A gig like this every Friday would do better for me than any SSRIs could ever. He seems like a really sweet guy as well, just really happy to be doing his thing. Looking forward to seeing him again at some point!

This was also quite healing because we tried to see him at one of the Ciutat gigs the day after Prima 2022 which was a disaster. Writing this out for therapeutic reasons.

It was brutally hot, we’d barely slept for two days, hadn’t eaten, were on huge whopping comedowns, and were (unbeknownst to us) coming down with covid. Went to the venue but none of the staff knew what was happening and didn’t speak any English (nosotros no hablamos espaƱol) and, unlike my usual experiences in Barcelona they were not exactly hiding their rudeness! We repeatedly got told to go somewhere else so we circled the venue for most of an hour (it was some kind of historical site) bouncing from booth to booth. Then we found a massive queue (not there when we first arrived) and when it didn’t move at all for 20 minutes we went back to where we were staying and slept for about 12 hours straight. Our horrendous state of mind didn’t help things and we felt pretty useless, so yeah, glad to vanquish that heinous memory!
