Mercury Prize 2018

Beat Pulp by one vote apparently.

Wait, they nominated Give Out But Don’t Give Up? That’s maybe even worse than M People winning

Got booed, IIRC

Thought about EC but Juan Pablo was only an EP, and I’m not sure it was released in the award window (it’s great though)

Kamaal Williams is actually a good outside bet I think

On a side note here’s the Polaris Prize shortlist this year:

U.S. Girls for me for that one. I saw last year’s winner Lido Pimienta live. She was good.

For me there is one standout British album of the last 12 months and that is James Holden & the animal spirits. Whether the album will be on the list remains to be seen.

Hope a good album wins this time around.

You’ve really hit the heart of the matter here. I mean you may be one of the great thinkers of our generation.

Why do you hate good music, Theo?

Gwenno
Go Go Penguin
Jim Ghedi
Lump
Poppy Ackroyd…
… all worthy

Yeah, I’m a bit confused what constitutes an EP or LP. I’ve bought records by Ashley Henry and Joe Armon-Jones this year - one an EP and one an LP, even though the running time and price were around the same.

Who knows, there might be two “token jazz acts” nominated this year.

Jorja Smith has a huge Mercury-friendly campaign behind it. I wouldn’t be surprised if she won, despite the album being interminably dull.

I’m predicting:
Wolf Alice (to win!)
Jon Hopkins
Daniel Avery
Young Fathers
Arctic Monkeys (have become obsessed with that!)
Gwenno
Manic Street Preachers
Hannah Peel (think July 20th qualifies for this year)
Mogwai
Bicep
Gaz Coombes
Four Tet
Jorja Smith
Baxter Jury
Novelist

Maybes:
Ghostpoet
Hookworms
Nadine Shah
Shame
Mastersystem
Years & Years
The Horrors
Johnny Greenwood (has a soundtrack ever been nominated?)
Gruff Rhys
Jessie Ware
Gary Numan
Boy Azooga
Goat Girl
Florence + The Machine
Girl Ray
The Orielles
Tracey Thorn
Sons of Kemet

Some contenders in here

List will be announced by Mary Anne Hobbs on 6 Music next Thursday (26th July) around 11am

Ooh had forgotten Mogwai were eligible. Every Country’s Sun would be a deserving winner. Otherwise (from your predictions) I’d be more than happy for Young Fathers, Nadine Shah, Arctic Monkeys or Baxter Jury to take it home.

Great album.

Great album. A bit short.

Interesting to see the bookies odds. Manics are 33/1?! Well worth a bet.

Yep, in the year Amy Winehouse was up as well.
It’s the Mercury’s ‘Raging Bull / Ordinary People’ moment.

How did I miss that Weaves had an album out last year?!?

But US Girls, for sure. Hard to imagine anything bolder or better.
