Mercury Prize 2018

The shortlist is out later this month, what do we think will get shortlisted/should get shortlisted? I’m guessing Arctic Monkeys and Young Fathers have a decent shout of getting on the shortlist, not sure who else though

Nadine Shah?
Mount Kimbie?
Hookworms?

The token jazz act will win it this year

Some more guesses from me…

Jon Hopkins or Daniel Avery (won’t be allowed two dance albums)

Alfa Mist or Sons of Kemet (won’t be allowed two jazz albums)

Superorganism

Shame

Tom Misch

Lankum (can’t remember if artists from the Republic qualify?)

Rejjie Snow (see above)

Let’s Eat Grandma in with a good shout I reckon

The LUMP album would be a Mercury friendly nomination.

SOPHIE and Let’s Eat Grandma too

As said above, this really should be the year where UK jazz picks up the award.

Would love to see The Orielles get a nomination, suspect they won’t though.

Would love it if Rolo Tomassi got the nod. It’s not likely but totally deserved

I agree. Jazz has crossed over more this year than in Mercury history.

If I were a betting man then I’d have a fiver on Ezra Collective or Dinosaur right now.

EDIT - actually, Sons of Kemet would be a massive shout.

Had the same thought when I saw the thread - very much deserved, but so unlikely Rolo’d be anywhere near the list. Several albums out this year that I’m loving, but none more so than TWDALWBI.

Yep. 1994. They beat Blur, Prodigy, Paul Weller, Pulp, Primal Scream and Michael Nyman.

Sons Of Kemet! Forgot about them. They deserve it. I was hoping for The Comet Is Coming winning it last year but I presume it was awarded to someone shit.

I really liked Gwenno’s album. It’s an interesting leftfield album. She was great live a few months ago. Awarding the prize to a forward looking Brythonic language album in the Brexit era would tick more boxes than giving to “the indie act” or the “token dance act”.

I hope Sons Of Kemet get at least a nomination.
