Met a cool old guy at work today

Older guy in his 70s came the shop today asking me for Silversun Pickups CDs. Ended up chatting music. Turns out this guy is basically into 00s Pitchfork-core alt/indie and his current taste is my iPod/CD collection circa 2009.

“Some of us pensioners do have good taste” he said. It was great. He kept mentioning bands he’d discovered online to see if we had any of their albums he doesn’t have. Almost every time I was like, hang on, they were one of the first bands I ever saw live.

We chatted about The Decemberists, Band of Horses, Starsailor, Silversun Pickups, Death Cab for Cutie, Postal Service, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Shins, Metric, Smashing Pumpkins, and Grandaddy.

Anyway, there is zero point to this thread other than to say, this man was nice. And i have no idea why his Apple Music album list that he showed me was basically a copy and paste of my old ipod.

Are you sure he wasn’t you from the future?

I honestly felt like he might be. It was utterly fucking bizarre.

Did he explain how he came to this point? Has he been listening to it for 15 years, or was he into music from 1995 back then?

Starsailor?

One of the most underrated band of all time. They had a short peak, but man, what a peak. From 2005 to 2009 they were the best band in the world.

Hope you punched him in his stupid face

Did he buy anything?

best bit of the job innit. I had a good chat with someone the other day comparing the amount of different variants of First And Last And Always we’d bought between us

Some of us like them OKAY

Yeah

I’m always delighted when somebody under the age of 40 buys a Sisters of Mercy album.

Thank you, I immediately regretted posting it because I thought it might be too sincere and whimsy

Do wish TikTok-influenced teens would move on from Around the Fur / Grace / The Bends already. Get into other indie stuff so we can get it in stock!
