Morning.
I’m looking to get hold of an Ableton-compatible mixer - I’ve been eyeing up the Behringer XENYX X2222USB 22 Channel Analog Mixer (yeah I know boooo Behringer). It looks like I can route each channel to a track in Ableton and setup send/return channels for external hardware effects. That’s basically all I need it to do.
Is it worth the money? Are there any other options out there that do what I need it to do? I could probably get away with fewer channels tbh. £200 is my approximate budget but always willign to spend more if it’s worth it.
OT, but does Ableton compensate for send/return latency via hardware/mixer?
Looking at the manual for that, it’s just stereo send/return over USB, not each of the tracks individually:
If you want an actual 22-channel audio interface/mixer it’s going to cost a lot more than £200 unfortunately.
Tascam do a 10-channel one for about £500: Tascam Model 12 - 10-Channel Analogue Mixer With 12-Track Digital Recorder & USB Interface - Andertons Music Co. (and a 16-channel version for about £700)
And there’s a 16-channel Presonus for a bit more: PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 USB Digital Mixer at Gear4music
Yeah but it’s complicated and depends how you’ve got things set up. Basically it’s set up to automatically compensate for interface latency and plugin latency by default, but you can tweak it if things aren’t right: How Latency Works – Ableton

FWIW, I use an Arturia Audiofuse 16Rig plus X8 In expander, which gives me 24 in and 10 out, with a software-controlled mixer and flexible signal routing. It’s not a full mixer (it’s a 1U rack unit, there’s no physical fader controls) but you can control it over USB-MIDI and I have a little Akai MidiMix for when I want to use it without the computer.
It… wasn’t cheap, though (about £1300 plus cables, rack housing, etc).

Constantly amazed that more haven’t tried to do what the Tascam in particular does and down to a price I’m basically saying behringer aren’t I

TBF Tascam are already half the price of what a lot of the alternatives are. Those mixers are extremely good value for money.
I’ve got one of these Behringer X18 Digital Stagebox mixer - Andertons Music Co.
Cost me about £250 second hand iirc, 18 individual channels via usb. Have to use a computer or tablet with it but for the price it’s pretty hard to beat. There’s a rack mounted version too, the XR18. I have a crappy old fire tablet that is dedicated to controlling it and it works fine.
I’d love one of the big Tascams but I can’t justify the cost (or desk space).
