New DiS podcast... meet The DiSpatch

Hi All,

We’re trying out something new this week and i’d love to hear your thoughts on the format… and ideas for future episodes.

This week’s podcast is a little more ambitious than the previous 39 episodes of the Drowned in Sound podcast, and the best bit is, I’m only on it for the first 90 seconds.

This idea grew out of your feedback in the recent survey (over 300 DiSsers took part), so I hope you like it:

What would you love to hear us do with this new format in future? I’m thinking of going to an Anechoic chamber, trying out haptic body suits, and going to some award shows to ask annoying questions on the red carpet. I’m also thinking of going out to some different music scenes and looking at the crisis in grassroots music.

I liked what The National did with this vox pop format outside of Chris Bown shows, but I’m not sure if it quite works if people don’t consent to the video going out online.

Just about to send this to our newsletter if you fancy a bit more info before listening

New Pod: DiSpatch

With our new podcast, Drowned in Sound is trying something new. It’s not groundbreaking by any means, but it’s a first for us and we’d love to hear your thoughts.

The idea came from the over 300 of who took part in our recent survey and we hope we’ve delivered on what many of you were keen to hear more of.

What is it? We left the comfort of our studio for the pilot of what we’re calling a “DiSpatch”. The concept, as the name half-suggests, is to get out there and bring together a mixture of voices, including insight from a reporter, a catch up with an expert, and the voices of our fellow music fans.

What’s the first episode? We’re starting big, we’ve kicked off with the biggest event in music’s calendar: Glastonbury.

The Pilot - My First… Glastonbury: When I discovered that music journalist Emma Wilkes had never been to Glastonbury before, I asked if she’d like to give an idea I had a go. I was thrilled when she said yes, as I love Emma’s insightful writing in NME and Kerrang! due to its fizz of fandom (a word we truly need to reclaim from snobby old blokes who have unrelentingly told me to tone down my passion for music since day of DiS…).

The report that came back not only takes you into the city of music that’s erected for a week on Worthy Farm with the wide-eyes of a first timer but distils what it was like to be there this year, with political fire storms amidst the heat.

In this 37 minute episode:

  • Emma’s thoughts on the festival and her highlights
  • Emma meets music fans at the start and end of the festival to see if the expectation met the reality.
  • Emma nipped back stage at Terminal 1 to discuss everything from immigration to the meaning of music with Laima Leyton, a Brazilian artist, education, educator, producer and musician who many DiSsers may know as a member of Soulwax’s live band or as one half of electronic duo Mixhell alongside her husband Iggor Cavalera (of Sepultura and Cavalera Conspiracy). Laima was at the festival with the conflict & climate org In Place of War team who took over Terminal 1 on Thursday.
  • Plus clips of speeches from Amyl and The Sniffers, Seun Kuti, and The 1975.
  • Massive thanks to our new podcast producer Josh Craggs for capturing and editing this episode
