Seems to be the concensus among insiders
Looks good. Surprised there was no Mario game, but glad that means that DK will get a chance to shine. Plenty there for me, will probably get one in September given that I’m barely gaming during the summer.
Shame there’s no type of upscaling. Did think it was unlike Nintendo to not give you a reason to have to buy the same games again, but at least they’re doing DLC versions.
I don’t yet understand why I would want to roam across the world in mario kart. Looks boring
That DK game looks a lot of fun. Been invited to pre-order. Tactic does work in tempting me, but don’t know if I’ll bother getting it straight away. Might wait until I’ve finished writing my novel - will be a good incentive.
Unless…
My guess is upscaling is how they’re hitting some of those frame rate / resolution targets, they’re just not wanting to talk about the how. I’d imagine the games with free switch 2 upgrades are mainly benefiting from that, whereas those with new features/content beyond upscaling are being charged £10-20.
Ha! Yeah, loved that story. I’d be happy with a load of Nintendo stuff in there. Might introduce a shady landlord character called Tom Nook…
A few bits that’s come out overnight or not been mentioned…
- support for variable refresh rate
- Japanese prices for Switch 2 editions look to be around £10-20 more than the Switch versions.
- Japan gets a £260 Switch 2 without support for foreign languages.
- screenshot/video sharing sends anything uploaded from your switch to the phone app for you to share on from there.
- battery life said to be 2-6.5 hours depending on the game.
What’s a variable refresh rate?
Means games dont need to be locked at a frame rate (vsync) to prevent screen tearing. This will allow for more responsive feeling inputs and less of a stuttery feel ln games that have a fps lower than the screens display
It wont be noitcable or a bullett point for your average consumer
Yeah, this is gonna be the key bit for most in terms of impact
Your game doesn’t just have to produce 60 frames a second (or whatever) without Variable Refresh, it has to produce them at regular intervals because that’s what the display expects. If you don’t, then you either loose a frame entirely (which results in stutter) or you render part of a frame (screen tearing).
With variable refresh rate you can just produce as many frames as you can and the display will show them when they’re ready.
This is now the Building a PC thread
I used to love the Burnout series but then they made it open world in Burnout Paradise and (for me, lots of people love it) totally killed my enjoyment. I don’t want to roam around the world looking for the fun: give me tight well constructed courses please!
Thank fuck for that cos otherwise I’d have to buy one of these things.
Have they said what’s in the treehouses?
Trees
Don’t think I’ll be massively into open Mario Kart because as it is my hands can’t really take a course followed by a rest followed by a course even anymore. Just asking for pain if I’m constantly driving no breaks. Kid will love it though and they’re old enough now they can probably handle any unlocking stuff so I won’t have to give myself useless claw hands for days. I will feel the fomo of not really getting to play a MK properly for the first time though ![]()
Houses in trees with trees inside the houses?
The thing that excites me about the MK open world is there’s a good chance we’ll get a really worthwhile single player mode. It’s the thing the series has been weakest no up to now imo. They perfected multiplayer.
