Still lots to see, I’m rationing them because I enjoy his stuff so much.
Going to see A Strange Way of Life tonight.
i do that generally too (did when reading Raymond Chandler books) but then I forget about it and accidentally years go by without trying out a new one. Oops!
.*The Skin In Which I LIve
Missing the short tonight, look forward to hearing peoples thoughts though. I’m at 12 features, there’s definitely some more i’d love to see, with All About My Mother being my favourite (and great to see at the top currently!)
Yeah I saw Mother for the first time on Saturday - instant classic, fell in love with everything about it
My memory is so bad can’t remember what I’ve seen and not but had a good guess
The first one I saw was Volver. It was definitely A Choice on my GCSE Spanish teacher’s part to put a film with that subject matter on in front of a group of 15 year olds.
A wonderful filmmaker. Someone with a fully formed personal aesthetic who manages to not sacrifice depth in order to maintain it (this is a Wes Anderson burn as well btw)
Also, apologies in advance, but my God, there aren’t many people who look more beautiful on-screen than Penelope Cruz in any Almodovar film
yer barred from my lovely thread
My favourite director, probably. Talk to Her was my first, at the Prince Charles Cinema in 2003, which led me to come out to my friend from sixth form I went to see the film with afterwards over a drink. Power of cinema and all that!!
The early ones are quite shonky and have a bit too much incest for my taste (!) but he rarely gets it wrong, I’m So Excited being a notable exception
22 for 22! impressive
please post more as you see fit
I, like I suspect many others, got a hold of that DVD boxset of Live Flesh, Bad Education, All About My Mother and Talk To Her as a younger man, Fantastic gateway into him at a v reasonable price. Unfortunately, however, my Mum did once pick up the copy of Live Flesh and quite angrily ask me what the hell was this and why had I just left it lying about in my bedroom…
Our Wes has said he is influenced by Nuestro Pedrito, so IDK if he’d consider it a burn. I think you are right, even as someone who enjoys who enjoys many of Wes’ films.
Got quite a few of his films on the shelf but never actually watched any of them. They’re more there as ornaments to impress people, like most of the books I own. Might dig one out later.
You should have told her it was an adaptation of a Ruth Rendell book, like the Sunday evening Inspector Wexford murder mysteries she might have watched.
What the heck? I don’t understand this post I’m afraid
