It has a few nice songs but ![]()
the good is great! just had a lot that washed by me as well -but will revisit
I think a lot washed by me too, the style kinda lends itself to that, but every time I gather my attention and really dig into it I feel rewarded.
Her NTS early morning show is great, don’t think I’ve ever listened to anything other than the odd track though
Love the Maria Somerville album. Cracking headphones listen.
I’d have given this a BNM but good review nonetheless
do we need to update the title to ‘deid… excited about reviewing albums!’ or something
Pitchfork Is Not Dead But Alive With Soul
Was fairly surprised by this album’s sound when I heard it, much more experimental than his typical ambient americana. I wouldn’t say I disliked it, but I guess I usually go to William Tyler for laid back warmth and this was quite the left turn
I’m very into the left turn, feels like a natural progression from all the warbling reverb on New Vanitas which appealed to me greatly
If the Kieran Hebden collab album comes out this year as well he’ll be having a great year
Tennis not too happy with Pitchfork:
Read this wanting to be #teamtennis, but
Weird comment. Not only do they lie about the fact that only male writers have reviewed their albums, they seem to expect the writer to know background details on songs that they haven’t divulged.
Think some general points are fair, but lots of artists think they’ve got better over time - doesn’t make it a reality or mean the listeners have to agree. Preferring a band’s earlier, less polished work is such a thing
Also context for lyrics is good, but if you know a song has an emotive story but the delivery doesn’t make you feel it, what can you do. That’s not a flaw with the listener, like they’re supposed to instantly get more depth from a song just because it’s what the writer intended
Depends if the details of said lyrics were included in the press pack or not
In all of our reviews, there hasn’t been a single actionable takeaway.
Yeah, some SMART objectives are needed please, and we can have an interim review at the end of Q1.
Benson Boone collab coming right up
I do sympathise with artists in general RE: high-profile criticism.
It must be galling when someone writes what looks like a fairly low-effort review that essentially discourages large swathes people from engaging with art you’ve poured so much into. Even more so if it kind of paints you as inadequate in the process. I’d find it really upsetting.
Having said that, yeah — actionable insight isn’t really the critic’s job is it?
Isn’t that the record label’s job?
5 pages? rattled. I kind of sympathise but also, idk
