RIP Tim Smith (Cardiacs)

Stumbled across this a cappella (or pronkappella as they put it) version of Sing to God if that’s of any interest to anyone!

Bloody hell! Impressive commitment there. They’ve even done Quiet as a Mouse!

They’re currently working on doing the same for Guns.

I was surprised too - it’s a pretty insane thing to take on (with or without their limitations)!

Opinions?

Not got through it all yet! Deffo some good/interesting moments on it. But I felt a bit overwhelmed by it at first, haha.

The first few tracks felt like AI doing cardiacs to me, just something mechanical in it that I can’t really put my finger on. Blue and Buff onwards feel much more interesting and natural. Volab and Skating are brilliant.

Only one listen in mind

Going to give it a first listen tomorrow and expect to feel a bit confused/nonplussed at first as that always happens to me with new Cardiacs!

This is quite a good way to describe some of it, yeah. I felt a bit like that about Woodeneye on first listen, but watching Kavus do his playthrough and talk about it, added the humanity back into it. I guess the weird thing is, is that the alien/uncannyness about Cardiacs could only really be human back in the day, but now we live in an era where that kind of thing is often done with AI/computer trickery so it’s less impressive or something.

Too early to get a good grip on this record, but I had it on shuffle and the mid section of Skating (around 3 minutes in) is absolutely demented in the best possible way.

Just how do you even write something as ridiculous as that.

I haven’t listened to it all, and maybe it’s because I’m deliriously ill, but I’m finding it really fucking moving to just hear it. All these people have united to bring a colossal oddball wonder back from the brink of oblivion, and it really is a testament to how enchanting Tim Smith was/is/will always be. The slight uncanniness I put down to it coming from that place in-between.

Hope you’re feeling better soon.

Gave it a first spin this morning.
It’s a hell of a piece of work they’ve done assembling that. It’s much warmer sounding than earlier records, Tim seemed to favour a more trebly high production and programmed drums. This feels more
organic or something. Very rich. Maybe less quirk going on - there’s no little bits of fat off vocals between songs or ‘Quiet as. Mouse’ type skits or whatever so on first listen it felt like one long track to me in a way. They’ve done a great job with the vocals I think. The actual melodies and vocal arrangements all feel very Tim. I did expect more female ‘choir’ type backing like on Ditzy Scene. Sleeve notes are very thorough, dispelling a lot of the secretive magic of Cardiacs but that’s ok I suppose. No individual tracks jumped out at me on first listen - it was more one long consistent piece to me like I say. We’ll see how that changes going forward. Not sure what else to say at this point.
Tim used to say ‘it’s just tunes, innit?’. They’re really good tunes.

This will be amazing. The lineup utterly justifies calling it Cardiacs. Like the shows last year.

Did anyone get tickets for London? I forgot till this afternoon and now it’s saying there’s none. :sob: Absolutely gutting.

It looks like SeeTickets have still got London on sale?
Hope you get it sorted

They’re still available. If not use Ticketweb. I am reliably informed it has sold really well today and will sell out pretty quick, but tickets are definitely still there as I type.
