Scagden's top 128 albums playoff

So I have really enjoyed the various top 100 lists that have been unfolding on the music board for the past few weeks. I’ve felt torn about getting involved myself; it does look like a lot of fun, but my faves are pretty basic ‘dis standard’ and does anyone really need another write-up on ‘In the Aeroplane’ or ‘Disintegration’ and how great they are? Probably not.

But what, I thought, if I chose my top 128 records and then, as I’ve done for a few years with my AOTY top 64, did a KNOCK OUT TOURNAMENT WHERE THEY COMPETE AGAINST EACH OTHER?

The records I’ve gone for are my personal favourites and they come with some caveats:

  • It unfortunately skews rather white, male and ‘from the past’. I have only really gone for records I’ve loved for a long time and, because of my historical listening habits (thanks past me you womble) I didn’t, for example, listen to much hip-hop until recently.

  • I have given myself a maximum of ONE record per artist (and I’ve been strict about Songs: Ohia meaning no Magnolia Electric Co or Molina solo but I’ve allowed both Godspeed and ASMZ as I think they’re different enough - you have to draw the line somewhere).

  • I’ve gone for my favourite RECORDS not endorsing anything about favourite artists so, for example ‘The Queen Is Dead’ is a great record regardless of my feelings about Morrissey (see also ‘Frozen Niagra Falls’ and Prurient who I believe is also a wrong-un and ‘Red House Painters’ when Kozelek certainly is).

  • I’ve almost certainly forgotten something really important to me.

Good idea this. Would be cool to have two different DiSer’s have 64, 128, whatever and make the case for each i.e. Number 37 and then a poll and DiS decides. Never going to happen though.

And it begins! (I never said I was going to do them in order…)

Well I’m not at work, it’s too hot to go outside and my kids are still in bed: I’ve got time to listen to these two splendid records back to back and decide which is best!

OUTCOME:

Belly’s “Star” is the first record to make it into the second round. Sorry Menomena, you put up a cracking show but ultimately you didn’t have ‘Dusted’ or ‘Feed the Tree’ and that meant that you fell at the first hurdle…

I loved “Star” since I first heard it 30ish years ago and it’s still just as great now. I don’t think I appreciated how fab the bass on the record is when I was listening to it in my teenage bedroom on a rubbish alba stereo but it really packs a punch and the guitars sound amazing.

Tanya Donnelly was a bit ‘always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ at this point in her career. She’d been in Throwing Muses for record after record but only contributing a couple of songs (the Lou Barlow to Kristen Hersh’s J Mascis) and then she briefly joined The Breeders and had pretty much the same role there. “Star” proved that she was just as capable of being the main attraction as the supporting role. There’s catchy choruses and sticky hooks but (perhaps the thing that gives “Star” the edge over its follow-up “King”) a little bit more of an edge and a hint of darkness mixed in with the sugar.

Go on Tanya! I loved this album because I was a big Throwing Muses fan by this point and was willing her to do well on her own terms. Still have lots of time for it.
