Shudder To Think

Imagine seeing this! Gawddamn. Five bucks as well, what a great way to do it. And a new song! Very exciting. I would really love to catch them if they’re properly back. Pony Express Record is one of my favourite albums. That’s all really, probably doesn’t warrant a thread, but I didn’t know where to put them, the delicious weirdos!

‘Get your goat’ for me, before The Swagger hit with full effect, although PE is great obvs. Saw them two or three times; ridiculously great.

Very much made an impact on my guitaring at the time too.

Would deffo see them again.

Amazing band, they should have been huge. I remember buying the ‘Funeral at the Movies’/‘Ten Spot’ CD on the day of my A level results (and seeing Mudhoney supported by Hole in the evening). Regrettably I never got to see Shudder to Think live, I’d soon correct that if their reunion reaches the UK.

Love 'em!

Deffo deserving of a thread with this news, too!

Probably deserving of me sticking them on right now as well.

Fantastic band, absolutely mad they were on Dischord though

That’s my favourite era of theirs tbh. I bought the Funeral At The Movies and Ten Spot all-in-one CD and Get Your Goat on vinyl. Forget they had a debut before that (on Dischord) too!

Their debut was on Sammich Records run by Ian MacKaye’s sister so very Dischord adjacent. It’s a great album despite the CD version containing a terrible cover of ‘Imagine’.

Ah, OK, it says Dischord on Spotify so I guess they uploaded it. Makes sense why I’d ‘forgotten’ that.

I also love Get Your Goat! You can definitely see Pony Express in there, but it’s more noisy and angular maybe. It’s all the weird little flourishes that I love about them really - there’s a lot of detail in there. I haven’t really listened to the earlier albums much (only when I started to get into them) so I might have to rectify that!

Different drummer and guitarist (thus songwriting team I guess!) between those two records, and for me the massive added glam element that Nathan Larson brought wasn’t entirely welcome! It’s still a great record though imo.

The drums on Pony Express were (iirc) edited to hell and click-tracked back and almost caused Adam Thing a total breakdown.

By contrast GYG is so fluid and light and ever shifting.

Get your Goat > Pony Express Record > Curses, Spells, Voodoo, Mooses > Ten Spot > Funeral at the Movies > First Love, Last Rites > 50,000 BC

Can’t really argue with that, but now I think I’ll actually notice it too! What’ve you done awakening my ears like this?!

I don’t feel too guilty; the drum thing has been covered in various interviews. Adam (?) was the drummer in Jawbox before I think? The recording of PE sounds harrowing!

Ted Nicely I think?

I’ll have a look for the interviews - I haven’t delved into the context too much (but really should). I kinda liked it just being this weird formation I found!

I wouldn’t necessarily look at interviews with this band; the (great series) protonic reversal podcast interview with Wedren turned me off massively, but really the band wouldn’t have made the music without the ego/personality mix I guess!

First stumbled on them via some random alt rock compilation and So Into You ripped out of the speakers and blew my mind on the spot. Incredible album.

Been spinning the FATM/Ten Spot CD in the car these past couple of days. Love 'em. Forgot about the Crosstown Traffic cover (they’ve left it off Spotify, haha), but it’s actually kinda cool imo.

Irked to have realised I sold my copy of Get Your Goat during some period of skintness. Bah! Thank god for streaming though!

Blimey!

Think both Jeff Buckley and Brandon Boyd wanted to front Shudder To Think

Jeff had a go.
