Singers You Reckon Are Putting It On

Tallest man on earth’s Bob Dylan impression

Based on the way she sings, I imagine Ellie Goulding talks using that cooing, infant-directed speech that adults do to babies.

I really hope Brett Anderson isn’t putting it on…

Passenger.

I think lots do, but I don’t mind. Sounds good and I can’t do it.

Steve Ignorant. I love CRASS and their albums shaped my musical sensibility and more but that faux working class voice has always irked me. Minder goes Punk. Crass - So What (Lyrics) - YouTube

“We can take the eyes out of your f***ing head” is one hell of a line though.

Frank Turner, Jamie t, kate tempest, kate Nash etc.

That prick from The Streets.

As much as I do enjoy Laura Marling’s recent few albums, the pretend accent makes me cringe a lot.

Mikhail Akerfeldt from Opeth - or anyone else who sings growl vocals.

To be fair, he seems to have got over the growling phase now, and sounding all the better for it IMO.

Few things grate on my nerves as much as fake American accents. (Real ones I tolerate; it’s not something they can help. ) A serial offender in this regard is Mick Jagger.

In the early days of Australian pop music, say up to the mid-1960s or so, it was common, even standard, for local singers to try and sound American. Sometimes they did this almost without realising it. I recall hearing an interview with one producer who found it a nightmare trying to get the backing singers to sing in their natural accents. they would be chatting around before the take, sounding like any other Aussie blokes, then on bursting into song would suddenly mysterious acquire fake American twangs. It was probably part of the cultural cringe of the time; “American records sell the most, so if sound like them maybe we can do the same”. That attitude has mostly died out, thank goodness.
