This is a thread for showing a song that is ok, but could have been great. We can pretend we know better than professional songwriters and give them some advice

This is probably the best Noel solo song, but the wordless chorus is quite lazy, and I think it needs a bridge or just another move about halfway through.

I really like the lyrics through.

Any other songs for the song clinic?

I want to like this tune but the song is just about telling a woman sheā€™s looking old to be honest, although not to worry about it. Bit weird and so it would be better if I just got to rewrite all the verses.

Iā€™ll try to come up with more specific examples but Mein by Deftones. It starts off great but then squanders the energy and turns into a bit of a dirge. It shouldnā€™t slow down, it should maintain the tempo (or slow down just for a little bit like Korea) and build into something bigger.

This is total nitpicking since itā€™s already a 10/10 song, but Iā€™ve always thought Lenker should have pulled a Corgan and screamed into the guitar solo in Not. As things stand thereā€™s that little gap between the end of the lyrics and the start of the solo that allows a tiny bit of the tension that had been building to seep out.

A lot that could be improved by adjusting the length. Some go on for too long and some are just over far too soon.

I know what you mean - the solo should come in a bar before - but itā€™s a superb solo and a superb song. I could listen to a 15 minute version of it and not get bored

came on the other day and I thought ā€œhuh, this wasnā€™t a massive crossover hit, why not?ā€ And Iā€™ve concluded itā€™s because itā€™s missing a ā€œTake On Meā€ / ā€œAs It Wasā€-style plinky-plunky synth line immediately after the chorus, to really embed itself in your brain

i much prefer Track 10 but Iā€™d also love a Lizzo-less version of this. As it is, I always skip!

Thereā€™s a great song hidden underneath Fridmannā€™s OTT production.

All Florence and the Machine songs could be improved if she didnā€™t have a shouty/screamy bit in them somewhere.

I always hear the beginning and think ā€˜this is finally going to be her really good oneā€™ and then a couple of minutes go ā€˜oh, ok this againā€™.
