TfL's Grassroots Music Map

A great initiative

But a slightly odd map - includes the Phoenix Arts Club (not sure I’ve ever known of gigs there), The Lexington is near Bethnal Green (for non-Londoners, it’s nearer Kings Cross and Angel), and doesn’t have venues like the Windmill?

What would you add to it?

Related to this project, Mayor of London shared this video with Skin this morning.

Oh I thought this would be like DIY and grassroots venues which would be quite a good idea but it’s just names of famous people

Cool idea. Not that well executed. Feels like the genre/artist should have more relevance to the tube stop? Or maybe it’s meant to but does it badly. Like put Dubstep near Croydon etc.

I not from london but would have thought the black heart would be on there?

Funny how ‘nothing’ which purports to promote independent music and the like ever really includes heavy stuff, either metal, punk noise or anything. Be it awards or projects like this. Which is weird as often they can be the most DIY/independent scenes around.

Yeah New River, Corsica and Avalon should all be there for instance, as well as Peckham Audio and Dulwich Hamlet ffs!

I don’t think David Bowie was from Tooting

A nice idea, poorly done. Deptford is now north of the river I see. I’m sure that’ll affect house prices. It seems odd that Grow is on there instead of Number 90. I’m sad power lunches didn’t make the cut.

I actually hate this (in its current form).

It closed ten years ago - I think all the venues on the map are current ones.

People putting non-geographically coded information into a map format is one of my most hated chart crimes, I think

It’s not a gig venue in the traditional sense, but a lot of drag and cabaret acts play there, so it makes sense to call it a music venue, I think.

This sucks.

Why is Kiwanuka down by the Southbank? I went to school with him in Muswell Hill…

And Kae Tempest is very vocally and proudly from SE London / Deptford.

It’s a bit strange that they didn’t bother renaming some stations.

just makes me (even more) sceptical of everything - in that - promote ‘nice’ independent stuff as it may blow up and we can be involved/make money if that happens. This lefty vegan grindcore collective though, may be doing incredible things locally and bringing international punx over to perform but we’ll never make anything from that…

Just the phrasing of “nightime economy” leaves a bad taste.

This isnt celebratory of creativity itself, just how it can be monetized.

funny how you can date this to within like 5 years from the names in the bottom right (don’t even know which line that’s meant to be)
