The 2024 album of the year DIScussion thread.

Rather than putting any chat in the polling thread …

… this thread is for any discussion around your 2024 albums of the year.

If you want to see what happened last year the polling thread was here:

And the results - hosted by @Severed799 - were here:

And if you are really passionate about ranked albums you can work back through the links to see the polling and results from all previous years too - I’ve been running this for about a dozen years now.

Have fun everyone!

Clear no 1, lots of potential movement in the rest of my top 5-10

Will try to do a ranked 50 like last year, enjoyed that. My shortlist for that plan already had 80ish albums so as usual - been a good year!

Reporting in for hosting duties once again

I don’t know

Formatting seems problematic for some already.

I think I have my top 5 worked out, maybe waffling on number 5, and need to finalize the order over the next few weeks. I’m usually not this close to having it figured out this early.

I am in no way ready to decide my albums of November, let alone 2024. Will be voting in January for sure but very much looking forward to the lists and chat in this thread.

Gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over

Really strong year for music imho. Most years Lenker’s solo album would’ve topped mine but there’s been Brat and a Beth Gibbons record, and Confidence Man knocked it out of the park. Then there’s Kendrick. Then there’s Magdalena Bay. Then there’s Hurray for the Riff Raff. Then Rosie Tucker.
Chappell deserves an honorary mention too despite being an older record, being a pretty massive part of 2024.

Yeah a good year I reckon. Much better than last year for me.

Big fan of the Nilüfer Yanya record

I’m amazed at just how few albums stuck with me this year. My top 10 is currently a top 9 and I’ve bumped an EP into that list.

It is a very good ep.

It’ll take awhile before I’m ready to decide, this ended up quietly being an extremely deep year.

At this point I’d say there are two 100% locks - Pissed Jeans and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Time for my favorite end of year tradition of being stressed out on @Prob500’s behalf over formatting violations in the voting thread.

edit: missed @jeromium’s post lol

It’s been a good month and I have a few that need a few more listens to see where they fit in the fifty, there’s at least one coming in December I want to wait for so will try and hold off until around Christmas before finalising.

interesting, i would characterise last year as ‘great’ and this year as ‘fine’

Fuck it just gone with it without thinking too much

  1. Los Campesinos!: All Hell
  2. Alvilda: C’est Déjà L’heure
  3. Waxahatchee: Tiger’s Blood
  4. Billie Eilish: HIT ME HARD AND SOFT
  5. Mean Jeans: Blasted

Could have had any of Ducks Ltd, Rosie Tucker, Teen Mortgage, Hurray For The Riff Raff or Los Bitchos in the last 2 places instead but the top 3 was pretty locked in.

That’s very sweet of you but I do go into the endeavour knowing that 10% of responses will take up 90% of my resources. It’s like coaching my son’s football team and the respondents who misspell bands names, put them in reverse order or put the albums name before the band name are the kids who refuse to pass the ball, track back or make a tackle. We can’t be too harsh on them, maybe they will get better with coaching?

For once, my favourite album of the year may match up with DiS! The other 5 probably get anywhere near the list, but still.
