The Balatro thread

I mean, all the antes are the same, you just need to hit higher scores? The boss blinds are random, but can absolutely fuck a well planned run.

some of the rewards aren’t all that useful, but some of them are potentially really good

off the top of my head, these are some of the best

  • the ones that gives you packs of Tarot or Planet cards where you can pick two

  • the one that gives you $25 for beating a boss blind

  • the one that makes the initial cards on sale in the next shop all free

  • the ones that make rare or uncommon jokers guaranteed in the next shop

you have to weigh the potential rewards of skipping blinds or winning blinds against each other

but trust me, skipping can be hugely rewarding

just loaded it up now. I skipped the small blind, picked one ‘hanged man’ and got rid of two low value cards, then I picked one that allowed me to make one of my cards a glass card

big blind, that skip reward is not worth it at this point

if there had been a ‘boss reroll’ tag, that would have been a good reward, as The Manacle suuuucks

So, I get that hearts are debuffed in this example, but why is that King debuffed?

because it’s a wild card i.e. counts as any suit, one of which has been debuffed. bit snide to debuff it really but thems the rules

Wait how the fuck does that work

This game has more batshit rules than marvel snap which is not what I was expecting

Yeah that is a perfect example of not being able to progress on Ante 4. I have no idea how to “win” that round, as it just doesn’t give enough cards to win it.

It is really annoying to not have any idea how to get beyond ante 4.

what level are your hands at?

like, I always try to get Full House up a bunch of levels if I can, or perhaps Straight. depending on what the game throws at me, of course

but I also like to buff e.g. two pairs, as an insurance policy

also if a card has been debuffed, you can still use it to make up a hand without losing too many points necessarily

like, this was still comfortably a winning hand

Can I make a suggestion? For the first few hours its better to experiment and see how the game works rather than trying to win/progress through the antes. Just see what works, what doesn’t and enjoy watching big number go up when you find a nice synergy.

i’d say you were casting your net a bit wide with your jokers there, +mult for face cards and 10s/8s - it’s better to focus on just one and then try and shape your deck towards it.

you’re also only adding mult with your jokers, you could do with adding chips and xmult

I don’t know what this means.

I don’t know, I can’t understand some of the systems.

I have not seen a single multiplier card. It is all adding multipliers.

I’ve been discarding every debuffed card, because I assumed it would score zero and not count, so this is news.

yep

x multiplier is sooo much better than + multiplier

obvs, as I said myself, you can only work with what a run gives you, but having a bunch of x multipliers will rack up far higher than + , because… maths

but hotbeef ^ is right, try to chill more and let it happen, don’t be too fixated on winning above all else. learning the mechanics is fun

so you know the planet cards? they level up the number of points each kind of hand gives you

I’ll find a screenshot

okay, wild example, but in this case I had levelled my High Card up to lvl. 60 (this is a lot, lol)

the blue is the amount of chips you get in addition to what the cards in the hand give you

the red is the multiplier

I’d get 10 for playing a 10, plus 606, then it’d get multiplied by 120

each planet card levels up a particular hand. Earth cards, for example, level up Full House.

you can keep track of the levels of your hands by pressing ’ - ', iirc

This is kind of my point. If you don’t understand the systems yet (and it’s fine not to, I agree with you that the games tutorial doesn’t explain much at all) then it’s not going to be easy to progress into the mid/late game. You’re better off learning the systems and trying to have fun in the meantime.

E.g. try buying a few planet cards and seeing what they do, experiment with tarots, skipping the odd blind etc

the card itself would score 0, but like e.g. a an ace is only adding 11 chips to the score anyway so if it’s debuffed that’s what you’re losing, the rest of the hand might still be enough to meet the blind

What the fuck, 300 million?! What in the fuck

Every single one is level 1. So if you level up the hands it saves and goes into your next game?
