The Case of Charles Dexter Ward (Lovecraft Investigations podcast)

So a mate of mine put me on to this and I’ve just finished and need to gush about it.
It’s a retelling of the H.P Lovecraft story as a true crime podcast, and the best thing I’ve listened to in ages. It’s very well done and really creepy in places. I was getting a bit worried towards the end as it was going to be hard to stick the landing, but they did it well.
Loved it.
If you want to listen to in on your phone, I’d recommend using the BBC Sounds app rather that streaming from the website.

Thanks for the tip-off - almost exhausted my Audible downloads so after something new for being at work and bedtimes - this fits the bill perfectly.

This was down this afternoon but is working again now. Fyi

Just finished this. Cheers for the tip. Thoroughly enjoyed it even though I found myself struggling to keep up with the cast of characters towards the end (this might not have been helped by listening to it over 2 weeks rather than bingeing it). Quite interested in going to read the book now to see how much was adapted.

Hadn’t realised this was the first of three adaptations so was pleasantly surprised when I did a relisten and discovered they’ve done The Whisperer in Darkness as a follow up!

Halfway through that currently and very much enjoying it. A different vibe to TCoCDW but excellent production and performances so far.

The recent bump inspired me to check this out and…

I loved it! Haven’t read the original book but the format worked so well and the episode in the trailer park in particular had me fucking gripped. Will absolutely be rinsing the rest of these in future!

The actor who plays Kennedy is so fucking good. Really knocks it out of the park throughout but is outstanding in that episode in particular

I absolutely adored the first series of these. Rinsed them in one weirdly tense evening. Wasn’t too keen on the second one - it got a little bit silly for me. I should really give the third a try though.

The forth one came out last month, The Haunter Of The Dark. They should really stop making these at this point, it’s gotten like latter day X-Files where the suspension of disbelief is just too much and it’s all about them over explaining the significance of everything and then ending the episode with a line that’s supposed to make you want to hear more.

“and you’re gonna love this”

“what?”

“do you want to know what the blamoojapip’s Uncle’s surname was?”

“tell me!”

“Dexter Ward. As in Charles Dexter Ward”

(dramatic theme music plays)

It’s like a confusing telenovela at this point.

I still really enjoyed it, but the characters should be totally insane and / or dead at this point.

The Crowley kickstarter series has just arrived. I’m excited

That was pretty good stuff! A bit dry, but it is a biography.

The exciting bit is the next crowdfunding event.

Oh my. Found the original series to be diminishing returns. The bigger the universe became the less I enjoyed it. Would love a return to season 1 without constantly trying to tie everything together.

I would love to hear the writers / cast just go for something else entirely, use the Mike Flanagan model.

They have a podcast called Mythos which is three episodes that was pitched to the BBC as a sort of British x-files, but it gets very silly, very quickly.

It’s a lot of fun

There’s also who is Aldrich Kemp which feels like an attempt at the 70’s avengers TV show. It’s fun and silly, with a Lovecraft crossover for an episode in season 1.

The last season is brilliant, if utterly, unashamedly meta.
