The Lemonheads

Can’t find a dedicated thread so starting one.

New album’s not bad, some examples of how good he can be, and some bits where it’s more obvious what the years have done to him.

I liked some of the singles from it enough that I’ll check it out, which I wasn’t expecting really.

I see Evan has written an autobiography

I don’t really know how I feel about stuff like this (and I guess the new LP), just feels like engaging with it is indirectly supporting (whatever he claims) his clearly still horrendous drug habits.

Some magic LPs in the 1990s at least.

Downloaded the audiobook last night using an Audible free trial. It’s apparently read by the man himself but there’s no chance it’s not AI, right??

It’s pretty basic in spots, but Evan managing to actually complete anything feels like a victory, so I’ll take that.

Marauders, Togetherness… & Roky are the initial standouts for me and J Mascis definitely elevates the record. I’ll probably give it a couple more plays then just add the highlights to a Lemonheads playlist and leave this one there.

As a long time fan, I can’t help but feel somewhat underwhelmed by it. “Deep End” gave me so much home when it dropped, but it’s so far better than everything else on the record. I will endeavour to love it, as I always do, but first impressions are disappointing.

As for the autobiography (of which, I believe, only the first couple of chapters were actually written by him), I suspect it will be a tedious tale of drug antics, but I’ll read it nonetheless

It’s a repeated refrain. Is that refrain 58 seconds long? I’ll check.

Was listening to ‘Come on Feel…’ yesterday. Whenever I read about that LP the general consensus seems to be that it was a slightly disappointing follow up to ‘Ray’…I think it is brilliant though and almost as good as ‘Ray’.

Shorten it to the same length as “Ray” (lose both Style tracks and the faffing at the end) and it’s absolutely the equal!

The new album’s pretty good, exceeded my expectations. I love how ‘Cellphone Blues’ goes off like an outtake from ‘Hate Your Friends’ towards the end.

Feels high risk but I’ll go to Bristol and cross my fingers.

I’m thinking Sheffield Electric (Leadmill) as I should be working on a project in a venue just around the corner (so that’s parking sorted). I didn’t go to the last UK tour and I’ve not heard any reports back, did anyone go?

Thought they were really great when they played there in 2019. Just looked up the setlist and christ that’s a lot of songs…

Didn’t think they were anywhere near as good the next time they were in town, at the O2 Academy.

I went to Bristol SWX (now Electric). Evan seemed away with the clouds but rattled through over 30 songs without incident.

Someone I know went to this one, from his write up it sounded chaotic and not necessarily in a good way.

Back end of the set would do my head in probably. Although I guess they did play all of COFTL, which was what was advertised…

This was my mate’s report back from seeing him in Berlin last month:

"As for the concert itself, Evan made a fairly hapless attempt to play drums on a track for the cheerful support act and then did a weird bit about losing his lucky vintage penny, and crawled through the crowd, leaving some of his sweat on me before disappearing backstage.

They eventually came out and played 90% of the bangers (no stoves, sadly) in a frantic first 30 minutes (great version of Drug Buddy), but, given what happened next, I think the rhythm section mostly held him together.

The rest of the band walked off at one point in a way that seemed normal at the time, but it sort of fell apart. He did a vague rendition of not wanting those two dollars back, but then drifted in and out The Outdoor Type as if he was on ketamine. He seemed to want people to sing along, but silenced everyone with his inability to sing anything in the right order. I can’t even remember whether that was before or after he did some incoherent 80s medley which mostly consisted of How Will I Know by Whitney Houston (RIP).

People walked out, but he pulled himself together enough to do a few of those innocuous country songs of his before scuttling off sheepishly."

Do they not play anything from the self titled album any more? It’s my favourite one, I think No Backbone is easily their best song.

Found this on YouTube, seems particularly rough!

He’s already disowning his book.

Ugh. What a horrible interview. And cutting half a set is punk rock in the way that John Lydon is now punk rock.
