The Sandman (Netflix series based on classic Neil Gaiman graphic novel)

This was my worry from the trailer… Still probably gonna give it a go though. Probably impossible to do the comic justice really, it’s so original and rich and imaginative.

Started watching this late last night. Loving it so far. I got a bit giddy when my local National Trust place turned up as the backdrop to Gregory, Cain and Abel.

Ooh we had a lovely lock down trip there once. Mini HYG caused an incident involving multiple NT staff when she claimed she was stung by a bee in the adventure playground (she wasn’t).

It has gotten better.

no offence like, but this is the most boring shit i’ve ever seen in my whole life (1.5 episodes in)

Well each to their own ( Three episodes on and I’m Raven about it)

Not a fan of what they’ve done to Constantine though. Great idea to make the character female but why couldn’t she have been a scrungy working class scouse woman?

Sandman sounds like an English version of ‘priest with the reallt boring voice’ on father ted

Sandman* is usually the most boring character in the comics. He’s the still point around which the more interesting and colourful characters revolve. Not true for every storyline but often true.

*I think i like “Lord Shaper” best

Been calling him Cheekbones McGee and think it suits him fine.

Just watched episode 6 - really really great. Loved Death, loved Hob, perfect translation from the comics

Tediously enthusiastic fan of the comics, think they (at least Season of Mists, Brief Lives and The Kindly Ones) are some of the best literature of all time but not sure about this at 3 episodes in. Thought the first episode was dreadful, the second episode boring and then really liked the third one so hoping it stays on that trajectory. The first few comics are, even if only relatively, pretty ropey after all. Will pop back into this thread when I’ve finished all 10 to have a proper read of people’s thoughts.

Any idea how it’s doing commercially and in viewing figures? My worry with a TV adaptation was always that it wouldn’t do well enough to get finished, and given the first 6 volumes are basically just a set up for the brilliant final third that would render the whole endeavour pointless.

Found the two eps pretty fun but yeah, some shonky effects, odd tone changes with Gregory vs the serious dark stuff, main guy being so Twilight is a bit ehh

Don’t mind Dr Who vibes at all so that’s not a criticism for me, but that is the level it’s at

For what it’s worth

Now five episodes in and in generally in favour. Some episodes have worked for me and some haven’t (interesting reading the above that a lot of us feel this but there’s not much consensus on which are the his and which are the misses).

Enjoyed the trip to Hell. Thought that her out of game of thrones made a great lucifer. Really glad they kept in Nada are they going to do that whole backstory? That would be cool!

Really liked the Diner episode too. The gore and madness were there but toned down from the comic i think but its the most splatterpunk thing he ever wrote and i don’t mind that just too makes it watchable on TV! Thought Lupin did a grand job of Dee even if it was a different character to the comic really. The early sandman comics are all about new twists on existing characters so it doesn’t bother me to much that the TV series is doing the same. Except Constantine. That was the only really bad version for me so far.

Diner ep and Death / meeting his friend every 100 years ep were great individual bits of business.

Not really my kind of thing but gave it a go. Felt like there was about ten minutes of storytelling in that first episode, all padded out with shots of birds flying about and stuff.

Watched the first episode last night because Her Indoors wanted to watch it. She enjoyed it, I thought it was a boring, flat, unimaginative and plasticky adaptation. Absolutely no flair or wonder or originality at all, stale and lifeless. Really felt like nobody involved had any passion for it. Hated it.

Ep 3 liked Jenna C a lot, feel like so much is happening though that I can barely keep any of it straight or get anyone’s motivations. Fun ride though

still really like Dream’s mannerisms and voice, just wish he wasn’t so clean and angular

I can imagine if I was passionate about the source material it’d come over as shallow / disposable but it really DOES get better if you can stick it out.
