After last week’s wallow in the bleakest of pits, today we emerge and celebrate, channelling the JOY straight from our hearts into this playlist.

So what differentiates joy from happiness, or bliss, or ecstasy, or any of the other shades of positivity you might encounter on your journey through the world?

Up to you really. For me I’d say that joy is a fairly simple overwhelming bouncing up and down on the spot with a big smile on your face sort of happiness. Brief, compared to contentment, less sedate than bliss, less ritualistic than ecstasy. The successful interview for a dream job, the sporting victory, the birth of a child, that sort of temporary but life affirming moment.

What does it sound like? It sounds like this thread. Bring the joy.

First thing that came to mind. A lot of these things are subjective, and I’m sure there are some early-20s associations at work here, but the big stupid synth riff is liquid grin for my ears

There’s a few from Underworld that land here. Probably got to give it to those big synth chords from Two Months Off though. Not a hint of melancholy anywhere in sight.

Just a bright, sunny, fuzzed out, joyful blast.

(It didn’t fit the album but I can’t believe it wasn’t even a B-Side, it could have been a hit single.)
