Some of the most heartbreaking songwriting around. I’m in. As long as I’m feeling emotionally robust enough, that is.
Saw one of his last ever gigs when I was in Brisbane, a long time ago. Good fun night but I’ve only ever liked that album he did with ASMZ.
Yes I think I’m up for this, I only know a handful of Vic records, mainly the later ones and I’d like to listen to the rest and hear what you guys think so why not
Don’t know his stuff at all, and don’t know much about him, but seems like he’s revered by a lot of other musical artists, so have been meaning to delve in for years.
How many releases/weeks are we looking at?
Only really know a couple of albums. Was introduced via Sparklehorse; he was Mark Linkous’ friend. Would love to delve in deeper.
love Mr. Chesnutt, such a powerful voice and idiosyncratic lyrics and delivery. Totally unique and a huge loss to music.
Saw him live once in Rennes in 1995 - really good.

Some strong songs on Little and it’s pretty cool they apparently just got all these down in a day, it’s simple but well captured. Vic’s words feel so fresh, unique I guess. Some bleak stuff but innocence and humour too, I enjoy the small surprise an unexpected word choice or lyrical turn gives. The embellishments that are there are pretty sympathetic, I guess it must be Stipe’s on keyboards? I like the haunted melody that drifts in on Mr Reilly and that nagging line over the top of Speed Racer too. I maybe found it slightly odd that there’s a uniform feel throughout then Stevie Smith sounds like something Alan Lomax could have taped out in the middle of a field somewhere, but the feel of that has its own charm.
I really like Gepetto, maybe it’s the strongest melody here? Isadora Duncan too, I don’t think I knew who she was before and it was quite shocking to read about her death. I could actually believe this is a dream Vic had and got down on waking, Isadora singing to him “I can’t believe you own this attitude”, I don’t really know what that line means in the songs context and it makes the dream logic of it feel more authentic.
