Cleo Sol and Inflo although there may be some others
Really liked the first album from 2019, havenāt listened to the second.
I think the first record this year is really powerful but musically I feel itās a bit samey.
I didnāt really get totally on board with the Cleo Sol for the same reason - I feel Inflo has become a bit one-note with his production this year.
In the Guardian review there was a mention that it had something to do with Leona Lewisās aunt or something.
Did Black Is qualify for a mercury because it was pay what you want on bandcamp when it was released?
As I said in the new release thread think Rise just shaves it, is a lot more streamlined and the Spokenword tracks feel more of the album than on Black Is. They are still the best albums of the year by some margin though.
In Rainbows was shortlisted, so I donāt see why this wouldnāt have been eligible too
Discovered this band in the least cool way possible - via Shazam when I heard them playing in H&M. Think it was āmasterpieceā that was playing. Imagine my joy at finding out how much material there was to dive into. Latest is absolutely brilliant.
They might not have wanted to enter it. I assume each artist submits to be included for the mercury prize?Thought Id read something like that about it in the past?
Yeah thereās the whole entry fee etc issue, I just meant that being on bandcamp wouldnāt have excluded it from contention
Just listened to Untitled (Rise) on the way home there. Christ, thatās good.
Both albums easily in my top 5 of the year to date. 5 also brilliant. 7 probably the weakest for me, but itās still decent. How they arenāt getting massive even quicker than they are is kind of beyond me, they have a pretty broad appeal to my ears.
I donāt think word of mouth is as much of a thing right now. Theyāve been the band Iāve seen mentioned the most of Facebook other than Idles though on the people I have on there.
They could definitely be bigger if they were focussed on being
man I feel daft for only just getting on these
This is fantastic. Really get lost in it. Got that Traumprinz-esque sound to it that stops the more recognisable samples being too distracting. Powerful and danceable and dreamy at the same time, I love it.
Black Is, is Rough Trades album of the year. Which isnāt interedting but, 5 & 7 are available on vinyl from Rough Trade if anyone wants them.
This a surprisingly good call from them. Donāt rate their top ten much otherwise (apart from Porridge Radio).
Havenāt looked at the others in the list yet saw Blue 5 & 7 on vinyl and pegged it to the checkout. Said before Rise is the one for me but, there is so little in it.
Very late to the party on this for a very silly reason
I must have got them completely mixed up with a different band as I thought they were punky indie rock
Black Is blew me away, just stunning.
Then listened to Rise and liked it but didnāt have the same impact, the sort of album I tend to enjoy but not return to. But will give it a lot more time to reveal itself given how much I love Black Is.
Albums seem to be being reissued but are really expensive - sold out version of Black Is was Ā£17.99 at Normanās and the reissue is Ā£30
Phonica are selling all 4 reissues. Came up on instagram today. Think the original versions of Rise and Black Is were about £30 because they were double vinyl?

Updated thoughts: Black Is and Rise both very good, though I tend to skip the spoken word bits
Was also relatively late to these, but I absolutely love them. Particularly think the production/sound of their stuff is absolutely spot on.
