Was just reminded of seeing Pup for free at about 2pm in Trafalgar Square as part of some celebration of Canadian culture thing. Remember being very scared of the number of crowd surfers considering the whole stone ground situation. They smashed it to be fair.
What are your weirdest gigs, not like bad weird but odd settings/ crowds etc.
I went to some gig they did that same evening somewhere tiny - maybe arranged on the day? Remember it was touch and go as to whether people would get in.
Manics at the Scala - it was the day after 9/11 and the atmosphere was as you would expect, it felt like nobody was in the mood for it, especially the band. They only played for about 50 minutes.
Coil supporting Sigur Ros at the Queen Elizabeth Hall - I was 17 and had no idea who Coil were. They walked on with two accompanying naked men who walked up and down the aisles offering apples whilst Coil made some of the most terrifying music I’d heard at that point. The hall was about 1/4 full by the end of the set. I stayed out of fascination more than anything and in retrospect quite chuffed to have been there as they didn’t gig very often.
Knew about the costumes and what not at the time but I was a dirty hippie, music never resonated, but buddy was a big fan and for some reason I tagged along. We were like 18 ate acid. It was phenomenal.
Remember seeing super crazy visuals and literally got splat in the face with fake blood or whatever liquid it was.
Crowd was a bit older at the time which was weird. Definitely the youngest there. Had to call my parents to come pick us up because we were zooted and couldnt drive (no ubers at the time).
Mom brought us homemade sandwiches, remember getting sick at the thought of eating anything tripping in the car. But god bless you mom.
