What are the good electric guitar brands these days?

Hello ,

I’ve been playing guitar for 30 years, but haven’t bought a new electric since getting a cheapish danelectro about 15 years ago.

Before that I had a lovely Epiphone Les Paul Special, which I bought fucking YEARS ago.

Can anyone recommend a decent budget-ish brand for electrics?

Are Epiphone and co still decent? Are there exciting new brands in the game?

I’m pretty easy on models, tho was wondering about a nice Tele-style guitar…

Any recommendations?

If buying new, those Jet ones are supposed to be great and have those lovely roasted necks.

Squier is good, but not sure it wins on vfm these days. Same for Vintage branded stuff.

Japanese out the box need to setup at all - so Yamaha, Ibanez. Also tend to get way more bang for your buck.

Tell you what you can often get on ebay in ‘box open, never used’ condition, sometimes with a hardcase and that’s those Vintage Joe Doe guitars which, if you can tollerate the wacky visuals are grand value at £200 ish. The normal Vintage versions are closer to £500 these days. Decent guitars!

That’s super helpful - cheers.

Wow! Those really are wacky. Not bovved about that tho myself - as long as it sounds good.

I had one of those for a week and returned it because I absolutely knew as some point I’d catch some clothing in the cactus and rip off one of the ‘tabs’, if you follow?

It was light and fun and sounded good. The visuals are pretty funny.

The ‘Gambler’ version looks much sturdier, hole-wise!

what’s the deal with those, quality-wise? like, material, QC, pickups, neck?

As I said, I only had one for a week. They’re the same as normal Vintage stuff, so Wilkinson hardware, decent timbers. I had a Vintage tele (can’t remember what; they use a really annoying letter/number system) which was as good as any non-G&L tele I’ve owned. Hardware is way better than Squire.

Wouldn’t pay normal price for the Joe Doe stuff (£500?) but for £200 on ebay it’s grand!
