Finally watched Licorice Pizza.
Normally love PTA, but thought this was pretty weak. Probably would’ve loved it when I was a teenager. Also wild to think Haim’s character would’ve been born in 1948.
Anyway, shite.

Just seen Conclave.
Good film. 7/10
Conclave too (wonder if something happened to make people watch it now…), also thought it was decent - enjoyable acting, some nice shots. Maybe a bit oddly paced. Wish it had been a Sorrentino film though
The Graduate is on iPlayer at the moment so I watched it on my train journey. It was hilarious! I didn’t expect it to make me laugh so much.
Enjoyed Sinners, but it was too slow. Eg.
i was thinking “this music’s been playing for a while … I wonder if it’s going to suddenly stop for dramatic effect” and right then a snake appeared and the music came to a halt…
Holy Cow - the bit where she flashes him at the end just felt weird
I watched a whole two films yesterday!
Parasite - yeah I can see why this is so loved. Even though I’d seen the shot of him driving the car looking fucked off a million times, watching it in context was so, so brutal.
Asteroid City - really pretty to look at because it’s Wes. That’s about it.
Watched The Machinist last night
Was alright. Worried that Bale was hungry
Watched Wiener-Dog last night. It is without any doubt a Todd Solondz film.
Funny. Blunt. Harrowing.
I can’t recommend the director’s commentary enough, Mike Nichols interviewed by Steven Soderbergh. One of the best i’ve ever heard.
Fucking Hell!
I was watching Sunday Brunch and Edith Bowman was talking about interviewing or working with the people behind the recent Bob Marley film. Tim said ‘ah, that Peter Andre film’ and Edith said ‘don’t go there’ I think.
Made no sesne to me at the time, but this horseshit explains everything.
Tampopo (1985). Had to keep pausing it because it made me hungry.
Just watched Pavements, the new Pavement “documentary” by Alex Ross Perry. Fun! Kind of annoying! Way too long!
Some recent watches through BFI player, at the cinema and TV…
The Teachers Lounge - lker Çatak
Really enjoyed this tense, school-based thriller. Felt the musical score was perfect, heightening the build-up of tension, although I did feel a little underwhelmed by the ambiguous, unresolved ending. Great performances, especially from Leonie Benesch.
No Other Land - Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor
Have been reluctant to watch this as it’s just too close to home for me, but it’s a fantastic documentary. I wish we didn’t have to live in a world where it exists, but I’m glad that it does, if that makes sense. As an aside, one of my roles at the BFI is the licensing and distribution of films to art centres, cinema clubs, independent cinemas and university student unions and No Other Land has easily been one of the BFI’s most popular film requests in recent years, and, through these screenings, I’m glad to say that not an insignificant amount of money has been raised for Palestinian relief funds. The power of film, indeed.
Flow - Gints Zilbalodis
One of the best animations I have ever seen. Completely floored me, and fully deserved its best animation award at the Oscars. Similar to The Red Turtle, its lack of dialogue gives it universal accessibility. Was lovely to watch it in a cinema with such a varied age demographic - from ages 4 to 80. Wonderful film.
The Piano Teacher - Michael Haneke
As brilliantly disturbing as I remember it upon initial release. Isabelle Huppert is simply astounding, giving one of the best performances of her career. For me, one of Haneke’s best.
Just watched Schizopolis, (Steven Soderbergh 1996) as part of my project to actually get around to stuff on my watchlist.
My letterboxd watchlist is filled with curios, movies I saw someone log or read about on a list and thought “huh, that’s interesting”. Unfortunately lots of times when I go to actually watch one of these, they’re not that enjoyable or… good. I fully expected this to be one of those, a movie that’s more interesting to read about than it is to watch. But I loved it! It had me hooting in my empty house. Mulholland Drive filtered through the Tim and Eric “Celery Man” sketch.
You have piqued my interest.
I am finally making peace with the fact that although I will watch other films my favourites are always going to be stupid / surreal comedies (or period dramas with historically accurate costuming)
You should definitely watch it then! At times it’s like a spoof of American Beauty (even though it came out 3 years before), then it’s like Beavis and Butthead, then it’s something else entirely. I had a lot of fun with it.
Edit - looks like the whole thing is on YouTube (albeit in shonky quality)
Moving to Spain and am trying to find an apartment, just sent an email about a flat on All About My Mother St. I prefer Volver but hey, that would be a cool street to live on wouldn’t it
these Spaniards sure know how to name a street
