What was the first 'Prestige' TV show you watched? X files does not count

What I mean is a high budget TV show, made in the US, which is serialised.

The first one I watched was ‘Heroes’ which I was very excited about. Someone also made a DVD with all of s1 on it for us so we could watch ahead.

I never watched after s1, as I understand it the show moves to Cork and they have lots of bad accents.

This is probably a crap thread tbh, I imagine most people will say the same 3 shows that are actually good. Maybe I should call the thread: ‘Remember s1 of Heroes? I have some fond memories of it that probably do not hold up today’

I remember buying episodes of series 1 or 2 of Lost from ebay, torrent downloads someone had burned onto dvd, because it was quicker to get them sent out in the post than download them on 56k dial-up in my shared house.

I too remember season 1 of heroes, and also remember it got shit very quickly.

My own personal answer is “24”.

Probably Sopranos for me

Sadly I don’t think this counts as prestige so predicably I’ll have to say ‘The Sopranos’ when it aired on Channel 4.

Oh yes, my brother got a massively expensive s1 region locked DVD of Lost for his birthday, I think before it came out in the UK.

Homicide: Life on the Streets

I think, certainly the one that made a big impression.

If we can include British it would have been I, Claudius or maybe the original House of Cards? (I’m sure I, Claudius was released first but not certain if I saw it on original airing or a repeat) Would have been relatively big budget for British tv.

Maybe West Wing?

Lost probs. Made it a couple of eps into series two before accepting it was utter shit and giving up

Lost, I reckon

X Files probably doesn’t count but it should so that.

Watched the original run of 24 on BBC Two so probably that. Think I watched two more series but gave up when I became old enough to realise it was War on Terror copaganda of the highest order.

The King of Queens

Oh yeah, X Files should count I think, so I’ll change to that

Also Homicide: Life on the Streets

At around the same time the HBO Series ‘Oz’ was big in our house. Great series, surprised it hasn’t had a re-evaluation/re-issue treatment

Does Buffy count? Or Star Trek Next Generation?

Twin peaks or northern exposure

Oh yes Oz as well.

In my book it should be fully serialised, non-episodic TV. This is irrational on my part obviously, X-files is miles better than loads of ‘prestige TV’.

I do think that episodic TV is way better. TV shows have become really boring films these days IMO.
