Black Country, New Road’s album is getting a lot of good reviews

Yeah, the production by the GvBs guy really works for them. That said, I really enjoy the first album Bronzee, it’s just full of ideas and fresh sounding. Most of those first releases on flower shop records are great stuff though.

Possibly the loss of music print journalism comes into it too (see also my rambles on the 2010s English bands)

I think the recordings are definitely there and some are presumably on Bandcamp. I think it’s more that none of the labels really had the clout to get noticed and few people think it’s worth putting the energy in now because at the time they were pretty much playing to their fanbase a lot so if you wanted to own stuff by them you bought it.

I don’t think that’s necessarily a true thing, btw, but I think it’s probably how they think (going off the guys I’ve met over the years from that scene). My gut tells me there is also a slight mistrust of the digital sphere for music which likely doesn’t help.

Yeah, Flowershop was a great little labal and Robin PS was an interesting character on that scene. My old band put out a single with him, and should have done an album with him; I can’t remember why we didn’t . Probably thought we were about to be offered a million by Columbia or something;

At the time I remember hating the production on the Architect, but listening to it now (on Youtube! Because I lost my copy and it isn’t on any streaming platform!) it sounds great.

Ha, I’m trying to guess what band it was now…Rosa mota??

I know it’s easy to look at things with rose tinted glasses but It was about that time I was in London and the gig/band culture was fantastic

Ha, no. Super obscure ‘nub’. They seemed like great times for bands.

I’ve not listened to Elevate for an age, will rectify today!

wow, no way! I loved that ‘fall guy’ 7, and i remember waiting for an album…Picked up a compilation on CD that i saw, but that must have been years after. Blimey, memories…!

Oh my! I wish I still had that Cd. I have Bronzee still, but its Architect that I love.

Ha! Lovely!

Yeah, the compilation was stuff that had been recorded during that era, but there was little interest in funding/releasing an album from any labels at the time, so we (heartbreakingly for us) didn’t ever get to make a proper one. It didn’t help that we consistently made terrible decisions based on ridiculous naivety…long time ago now!

I loved that period.

Months down the line I’m a bit unsure on For The First Time. I like it a lot, but maybe Instrumental works better at the start of an hour+ gig, rather than a 41 minute album. I would have preferred if Opus was the first track, Instrumental left unrecorded, and something else at the end there. I’ve ended up watching/listening to the Southbank gig a lot more.

Seems like it won’t be long for album two mind - I think they have finished recording it now/have done most of it. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if they include another version of Sunglasses, as they’ve changed the second half completely and will won’t play the version from the album live anymore.

Saw these guys in Brighton last night. They were great! Some old tracks and a couple of new ‘works in progress’, one of which was genuinely amazing and made me extremely excited for the next album. Did a conga line dance onstage to Low Rider and finished with a thrilling cover of Mamma Mia, both of which were… unexpected.

thought you were part of this, and thought that wasn’t very distanced of you!

Yeah, they do make it difficult on the listener by top and tailing a brilliant Trk2-5 with an acquired taste Trk 1 and 6.

I forget they’re basically a studenty band who haven’t toured a great deal yet and therefore have all the irritating downsides of that, including stuff like the above which… probably seemed like a great idea in the van.

Aren’t they like 19-20?

They did!

This is all very old man yells at cloud. I like that they do stupid stuff like this, I do it in the shower

I would happily have traded being a bit of a twit at 20 for being able to record music of the calibre of their debut.
