If I’d paid to watch you shower, I’d also complain about a bad ABBA cover tbf
I’ve also only released 6 tracks/40 minutes of content on my shower LP, but you’d beg for an hour long show Jaggy P
How much are you selling the cans for?
I reckon it raises interesting questions in terms of ‘rock’ as serious art form though. Yeah, play stupid covers or whatever, but accept that it is just as much a representation of your art as the other tracks.
Like Tracey Emin doing one of her things, and then adding a shit doodle of the cast of friends in the corner, but asking people to ignore it…
I don’t know where I stand on this.
Don’t think they remotely care about this. The band have spoken before that mainstream chart music is the only stuff that they all like and so they speak quite a lot of their love of Billie Eilish etc. One of them used to wear a Bhad Bhabie t shirt on stage.
annoys me when bands say this kind of thing when it’s just really obviously a lie. what’s the point?
I mean, I think it’s probably true in their case just as it is with most people under 30 who grew up with youtube and streaming. There’s no real distinction between spending hours listening to Slint or Kylie because they can both exist to people that age without any immediate cultural context. The entire experience of discovering music has been flattened out like that.
I’ve seen the “LOL we just love pop music!!” thing trotted out by loads of bands over the years and it’s always been a bit cringe, but I think it is a bit more aligned to how younger people listen to stuff nowadays.
We all do it though don’t we? I know if I was on desert island discs, I’d be tempted to go full-on pretentious rather than Husker Du, Supertramp, Mingus or whatever that would be far more honest…
I reckon I would be inclined to agree if they sounded like Slint meets Beyonce, but the TOTP influences are pretty much absent.
Thought their arrangement of Time to Pretend was quite good but the videos of Mamma Mia do look quite awful. Think I was getting a bit more out of them as a band when they were more mopey and hyper-confessional lyrically, but I’m along for the ride with gusto. Also reminds me of my mate’s band from university who used to finish on a cover of Voulez-Vou haha
how dare a band in their late teens and early twenties have a laugh and enjoy themselves on stage after the stress of a much hyped debut album release amidst a pandemic. They better not make mistakes like these in the future (!)
not saying they don’t listen to mainstream pop music but a band who sound like Slint claiming that mainstream pop is ‘the only thing they like’ is just obvious nonsense
You’re paraphrasing though, as was I most likely. I think what they were saying is that pop music is the genre they agree/ meet in the middle on the most. Not that it really matters.
Makes total sense to me why a band who grew up in the youtube/4music/post-MTV era should all share a liking of mainstream pop music.
Sorry I don’t think I intended this to be a direct reply to you - just think we’re all overreacting a bit here to what is just a bit of fun
Yeah I definitely get this. Considering they only played about half the album I can understand if people feel a bit miffed that they skipped some of their own tracks in favour of a cover.
Again yeah I agree.
kind of a shame that they all like abba but instead of making music like abba they’ve got to make that slint no wave sort of stuff.
Fwiw there’s a podcast where they talk to Britt from Slint about how much they love Slint and other beloved bands of the wanker canon
(Down to the fact that the number of tracks on For the First Time was because of the number of tracks on Spiderland)
It’s a really lovely podcast too
Also to be brutally honest, having listened to the Abba cover
Lighten up ffs
:safetywink:
ActuaLOL
People annoyed? By a band? Covering a song they like? Y’all must have been pretty pissed off when Sonic Youth covered the Carpenters so.
