Bruce Springsteen Listening Club

Our good friend @NeilYoung has suggested a Bruce Springsteen listening club thread, so that is what we are doing.

We’ll cover all the studio albums, with a couple of weeks devoted to other releases (such as rarities or certain notable live releases that probably deserve their own week). Some weeks for studio albums may be doubled up with an associated release if it seems appropriate.

There are a huge amount of official live archive releases, but unless they’ve had a full release (meaning widely available to buy/stream) then we’ll ignore them, but if you have one that you feel is worth bringing to the attention of everyone then feel free to do so (e.g. if you’ve got a great one from the Born in the USA tour, mention/link to it in BITUSA week, and anyone interested might pick it up then).

Proposed schedule:

Week 1 - Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.
Week 2 - The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
Week 3 - Born to Run (also Hammersmith Odeon London '75)
Week 4 - Darkness on the Edge of Town
Week 5 - The River (also The Ties That Bind: The River Collection)
Week 6 - Nebraska
Week 7 - Born in the U.S.A.
Week 8 - Live 1975-85
Week 9 - Tunnel of Love
Week 10 - Human Touch and Lucky Town
Week 11 - The Ghost of Tom Joad
Week 12 - Tracks
Week 13 - Live in New York City
Week 14 - The Rising
Week 15 - Devils & Dust
Week 16 - We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions (also Live in Dublin)
Week 17 - Magic
Week 18 - Working on a Dream
Week 19 - The Promise
Week 20 - Wrecking Ball
Week 21 - High Hopes
Week 22 - Springsteen on Broadway
Week 23 - Western Stars (also Western Stars – Songs from the Film)
Week 24 - Letter to You

I’ve put The Promise in with its own week according to its release date there, but we can maybe combine that with the Darkness on the Edge of Town week if people prefer, we’ll cross that when we come to it.

Also we could maybe squeeze in a week somewhere to pick up EPs/rarities not covered by Tracks or any of the other reissues if there are enough easily available to warrant that.

Any suggestions then please post them!

Do we want to kick off this week, or will we wait a week so that you can all clear your schedules for approximately 6 months of The Boss?

  • Start immediately
  • Start from Sunday 13th June

Remember, the most important thing is that we all have fun. Good, healthy, extremely regimented and strictly organised fun.

I’m in, but I worry that some of this timescale is a bit tight, even at six months! Tracks is four albums worth of material, and I think people might struggle to get through it in a week, which is a shame as it has some of his very best stuff on.

Thanks for doing this. I will inevitably fall behind so will say now that inclusion of the 75-85 live era is a good thing. Best recordings of the Nebraska material imo.

Gonna remedy my lack or knowledge luckytown onwards.

Good point. Where some of the material is clocking in at over, say, 90 minutes then we’ll look at spreading it over a couple of weeks. We’ll just go case-by-case and decide as we kick off each one.

I might start this as I’ve always thought Springsteen was shit and I want to change my mind

I’ve seen him once live and he was great.

Never considered myself a huge fan as I don’t really know his back catalogue well at all.

Letter To You was my AOTY for last year. A 10/10 album.

Even though I voted to start next week I might listen to the first two on the list as they’ll be new to me.

Amazing! Psyched for this!

Maybe a controversial choice but I kinda think
Human Touch and Lucky Town should be seperate weeks. They don’t sound hugely alike (Human Touch is totally AOR whilst Lucky Town is basically alt country) and we’re effectively recorded at different times. Also Lucky Town low key rules

Excellent thread. And you can read it all here, on the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, house-rocking, earth-quaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking, love-making, legendary DROWNED! IN! SOUND!

Yeah, we can split those up. I just paired them because obviously they were released together, but they might benefit from being considered separately.

Okay, we’ll start this from Sunday 13th then, and we’ll see how it goes.

Good stuff. Look forward to this. So many great song!

Aaaaah, can’t wait! Finally the impetus I need to sit down with his first two albums, which I’ve never really got on with despite considering myself a massive fan.

I’m in the same boat. Plus haven’t listened to The Promise more than a couple of times, so a good opportunity to give that a decent airing.

Mostly I just listen to Nebraska and The Ghost of Tom Joad so it will be nice to revisit the whole catalogue and give it all a bit more attention.

One small suggestion. Maybe have a weekly vote on top two songs per album, create a Spotify playlist? Did something similar in NY listening club. Vote for two per week mid week-ish, always have something to revisit.

Up to you my good friend however.

Yeah, we’ll do that. I’ll need someone else to volunteer to actually compile the playlist on Spotify though.
