Cod Reggae

Incredible! How did you manage to do this?! Genre-tags on Wikipedia?

Haha, thankyou - I was trying to beat lockdown inertia a couple years back and this felt like a decent project to get stuck into.

I mostly just used google to search individual websites, like site:wikipedia.org or site:discogs.com and then pairing it with “cod reggae”, “reggae-lite” etc.

Think the bulk of the tracks came from mainland Europe in the 80’s and 90’s. Most of it is really bad and a couple of tracks were borderline xenophobic tbh!

Every time. The level of patience she manages to retain during this interview is bordering on superhuman imo

brilliant stuff. I liked scrolling through and seeing stuff like It’s a Crime (Magnetic Fields) and Caught in the Middle (Pararmore) and being like “…oh yeah”

And I thought ‘Wonderful Christmastime’ was Macca’s worst Christmas related atrocity.

I’m a lifelong reggae fan and a bit of a purist, but I love that Serge Gainsbourg album. His vocals in that context but take a bit of time to get used to, but everything else about the record is 100% authentic and top quality.

You could not get a better group of musicians to make a reggae album (Sly and Robbie, The I-Threes on backing vocals, Ansel Collins on organ etc) and it was all recorded at Dynamic in Kingston. It’s really not ‘cod’ at all. Not like a load of white session musicians in Surrey thinking they can ‘do’ reggae.

There’s an awesome dub version of the record too.

Yes! This guy is bonkers. He actually went and performed in Jamaica and by all accounts was well received!? Don’t get it.

And it’s not just rapping. He’ll do interviews like that.

Yeah it’s absolutely mad and he just switches it on when the time is right. His actual speaking voice is here and he’s just got a bit of a London/Kent accent as you’d expect but he occasionally slips in a word or two in patois

I could literally put on a Nigerian accent and make an afrobeat album and it would have the same credibility but I would be so confident that at some point somebody somewhere would shoot me down or have a quiet word but apparently not here
