Apparently my new shoes have got wooden soles, gonna try and break them in tomorrow
My old Northwave shoes were bloody great. Enjoy.

This makes me a bit sad. I broke my wrist and arm in an accident three months ago and I’m still not healed enough on the wrist to be cycling again. ![]()
I feel a bit of a fraud posting here as I’ve not been on a bike for over 15 years. But as I live by some stunning countryside Oxted/Tatsfield/Westerham etc I keep thinking and wanting to get a bike and getting out in the country. I’m pretty fit, I go to gym and walk in the country.
But I’m pretty scared about going out on the roads as it’s been so long, but I should get on with it. But could any of you guys recommend a starter bike (not too cheap) I’m willing to spend if it lasts etc.
Very familiar with cycling around all of these places, and you’re not wrong; it’s lovely. Love going through Tatsfield so much, well pretty. Be warned though, there’s a steep “ridge” just north of Westerham and the hills around there are bastardous (Hogtrough / Brasted / Sundridge, and then Toys etc). But yeah: doable, hilly, lovely. My favourite spot is the little shop at the top of Ide Hill looking down towards Bow Beech Reservoir or whatever it’s called.
Bike-wise, what’s your budget? Obvs I will say you can’t go wrong with a budget B’twin:

Obv if your budget is more than £300 you may be able to do better.
There’s loads of guide about this:

When you get yourself sorted give me a shout; I have lots of routes which will show you the best roads around there.
I’m changing from the MTB to road at the end of the month - I’ve tried repositioning the cleat, loosening and tightening the shoe too, and I’m pretty sure its the small surface area of the pedal that’s causing the pain in my foot.
I had around £300 -£350 in my head. There’s a new big Decathlon in Crawley, I might go there next weekend and have a browse. So the one you posted might be ideal.
Yeah there are a few hills that can catch you out if you don’t know the area.
I’m going to the Botley Hill Farmhouse later. It’s a lovely place with stunning views. Would be nice if I could just jump on a bike and cycle there.

Use their car park lots to regroup before heading back to Penge.
I was getting pain in my foot on my road cleats and it turned out it was because my saddle was too small (narrow). was convinced it was something to do with my shoe since my arse felt alright, but nope. was pinching a nerve or something. got a wider saddle and then it was fine.
One foot or both? It’s both for me.
was just the one
No one on here doing Velothon Wales? I’ll pop down and give you a motivational wave as you come through Caerleon.
We were staying just opposite the depart in Cardiff. Saw so many lovely bikes this weekend
fucking amazing speed on that (if it’s you I follow on strava, think it is)
