Yeah, it’s such a great album, I can’t stop listening to it. It’s bizarre how such bleak and at times ugly sounding music can be so catchy.
Thanks for mentioning the Alex G record so much in the discussion thread, it reminded me to return to it. I remember thinking it was ok back in August but yeah, it’s great. I’ll have to give Hovvdy a shot, I’ve never listened to them before.
Oh definitely assumed they’d be someone you knew about! They’re much more mellow than Strange Ranger but elements put me in mind of them, along with Alex G and Sparklehorse. The first album was good but a bit too one-paced and sleepy for me, the new one adds a lot more variety and instrumental quirks that lifted it for me. So Brite is my standout track.
Then add to that the Adrienne Lenker & Buck Meek albums and the Buck Meek solo album. It’s a really solid body of work for a new band in that amount of time.
Both Holly Herndon and, especially, Pye Corner Audio are too low down. Great albums that deserve a better showing. Knew I should have voted.
I thought it was good
Think they’re even better live than on record for me. Number 12 in my long list apparently…
thanks @Prob500 for pulling all this together, sterling work. ![]()
Right, so I’m fully into Self Esteem now. Cheers lads.
The Chemical Brothers was robbed!
Consolidating them with and without the definite article gives them 33 points, so in joint 9th position with Little Simz (and everyone else moves down one place)
At least half of the effort in doing the lists is cleaning the source data - bands with different spellings (misspellings), with/without The and contributors putting band names before album names and so on. Normally get these weeded these out, but the Chemicals were missed - sorry Bros!
Wow that’s a hell of result for the Chems.
Thanks for all the hard work @Prob500
*Something about this being too low down… *
Thanks for compiling @Prob500, only really heard a handful of this selection this year, but will certainly investigate more. Reckon I would like PUP but not given them the chance…
Seriously though, St. Pierre… come on, it’s fucking ace. ![]()
It’s usually a four way tie between U.F.O.F., Cattails, From, and Terminal Paradise. Right now I think it might be Terminal Paradise though, that part after the small pause where her voice breaks might be the best moment of the album.
Gald to see Cate le Bon get some recognition. Reward was the album I found myself going back to alot this year. For anyone looking to check her out have a listen to “are you with me now?”. Good introduction (though a bit misleading as the rest of her stuff is a little more obtuse).
Also check out DRINKS, her collab with Tim Presley of White Fence, for some Post Punk niceness.
The bit where buck Meek’s voice joins hers on terminal paradise sends shivers down my spine. Proper bill callahan joining joanna newsom on Ys vibes.
My other contender would be orange.
Same with the backing vocals on Not and Replaced on Two Hands, I love them. Replaced hasn’t gotten enough attention in general, probably due to Not being such a standout.
Norman records had the Reward LP in their January sale so that’s going to be my Cate intro.
Jamila Woods CATAPULTED into the top 50 by just me and one other guy voting for her ![]()
Did my own because I like making lists (and forgot to vote in this).
